A third rounder for a competent QB? We were fleeced. We were robbed. Geno is disrespected. And now the cupboards are bare.
WE gave a third rounder for Charlie Whitehurst. You don't remember him? That is so shocking, that you cannot remember a guy who did nothing, never ever. WE gave a third round draft pick to some team just because he looked sort of like he might some day be decent backup QB. Whitehurst never looked good. Never won an award. Never reached the pro bowl. Never played an entire game as the starter for another team.
We gave a third round pick for Charlie Whitehurst. Let that sink in.
In all fairness, draft pick valuation has changed quite a bit since then. Teams are stingier than they used to be. Plus, I think everyone knew we overpaid for Whitehurst at the time. As a Geno supporter, I think this goes to show how much (or little) GMs around the league value him or anybody else who is just good-to-real good but not elite, compared to how us fans value(d) him.
I like Geno almost as much as Mike McD and I don’t begrudge him the opportunity for an enormous payday. However, I think QBs are over paid in general. Perhaps 5 are guys that truly carry a team and Geno isn’t one of those so I’m happy the Hawks got a valuable pick and hope they spend the pick and money wisely on younger, cheaper talent.
As has been stated by many- build the trenches, defense, and running game so the QB is less vital. Then hopefully find a cheaper version of Geno, good but not great, until a true difference maker is available. Like many I wasn’t impressed with Howell’s one lengthy appearance last season, but I was in the building when he almost single handedly put a mighty scare in the Hawks as the Moons QB. He’s mobile, young, and cheap with experience as an NFL starter. Truthfully I wouldn’t be shocked by a Lock/Howell QB competition with both ultimately making the team. Both could be had for less the Geno’s salary last year allowing that much desired upgrade everywhere else.
Two quick thoughts now that I've slept on all this.
First, the Seahawks now have more flexibility and choice than they've had in a very long time. It will be instructive to see what JS does with that.
Second, this isn't a tear-down or a re-build nor especially a prelude to tanking. It's a youth movement. SSJ has already demonstrated the folly of third WR contracts. Geno is, what, 34? Tyler is 32? I realize their release also buys financial flexibility, but more importantly it allows us to get younger at key positions.
So far, unless and until something stupid like Aaron Rogers happens, I'm a believer.
Lockett was a no brainer release, Metcalf is not worth 30m a season and I would have been happy to see Smith cut, so a 3rd round and heap load of cap relief is great.
I am more than happy to suffer this season to get every thing in order. Just don't sign Darnold to spoil it.
I know a lot of y'all want to get a 2026 pick back from a DK trade, and that a future pick is usually worth less making them more likely to be a better round than 2025s; but, we need to remember that we are not the only people who know that 2026 is a better more QB rich draft. If we know it, other fanbases know it, and more importantly, ALL GMs know it. That's going to cancel at least some of the time-value of draft picks effect, if not all of it.
2026 picks are not cheaper than 2025s. They are only slightly cheaper to teams who are competing for the Super Bowl or who already have their franchise QB.
I’m late to the party. I do love the aggression by John and Mike. It will all come down to what they are able to do with their assets, cap and draft picks. JS has all the flexibility he could possibly want now. Use it wisely.
Been somewhat absent from SSJ chat for a little bit - but Kenneth you're crushing the off-season so far. Quick reporting with quality, as always.
We're seeing now how much roster control Pete held in those final years, and i think whilst last year there were some moves it's clear JS was just getting his feet under him and testing the waters of how good MM could be as a coach. A solid progressive season on the field has breathed life throughout the entire organization, top to bottom.
JS is seeming back to his 2010 bravado, willing to take a risk. I've been begging for this for months. JS has put his job very much where his mouth is with this move and with this entire off-season so far. And i am HERE for it!
I feel like i called Geno to the Raiders the day they hired Pete. He's Petes Guy, Pete loves Petes Guys. Expect the Raiders to be a more solid team this year but the top AFC teams can continue to ignore them as serious threats to the post-season. Sorry Vegas, welcome to fairly boring mediocraty.
Lets fucking go!! Seahawks! Seahawks!! Seahawks!!! will we... might we... draft Quinn Ewers now.... omg i'm trying not to get too excited... 2027 Superbowl here we come
Quinn Ewers is less of an NFL insiders' consensus than Will Levis was in 2023.
Just reflect on that a bit.
There's a reason they're calling this a shitty QB class. This ain't the year to find the Geno replacement in the draft. It's next year, the 2026 draft.
So you look to FA, and there's one guy who's head and shoulders above the rest which is former #3 overall pick Sam Darnold. What I worry about:
1. The Rams ate him alive, 9 sacks
2. He had the 2nd most time in the pocket in the league, yet still took nearly as many sacks as Geno (50 vs 53)
3. Geno had 58 bad throws or 10.1% of attempts. Darnold had 77 or 15% (for those of you who were screaming at your TV sets, better get an extra box of Chloraseptic)
4. Darnold was throwing to Justin Jefferson and TJ Hockenson, to mention two who are better than anyone we have
Basically says both Geno and Darnold had similar completion % above expected (better than league avg), but Geno did it with -.2 secs/throw vs league average, while Darnold did it (and every other passing stat) with +0.4 secs/throw vs league average
In other words, Seattle had better completely revamp its OL, or, get ready to see a whole lotta games that look like the Rams/Vikings playoff matchup.
I mean, i was and still am vehermently against the Mayo Man QB. I'm also far far from arguing we use our #18 on Ewers. But Day 2 he's completely worth the tryout. His weaknesses as a QB prospect are known, but not issues that will tank his entire chance in the NFL like the Mayo Mans issues were fundamental.
Mayo Man had such a huge disconnect between his feet, hips and arms it built in fundamental inaccuracy. This hampered his throwing in the pocket, and on the move. It was something in College he could work around with sheer arm power and favourable college playbook.
Ewers issues meanwhile are very different. His flaws are a relative lack of athleticism and potential injury concerns. But the core mechanics needed to play QB - processing time, linked up feet-to-hips-to-arm movement, and ball release - are probably the best in this class and are on par with any of the Round 1 picks last season. For me he's an ideal Day 2 pick where you can sit him a year and really work on his physical traits and bulk up to NFL level, Players very very rarely get the HS recruit grades he got, and that's with good reason. If we could build him up slowly, give him a year to work and full get over those injuries, and slide him behind a good O-Line we could be laughing all the way. Or we blew a Day 2 pick, oh well we do that most years anyway.
I have nothing to say about Darnold. I'm not going to debate Darnold vs Geno because honestly to me they're basically the same. The only element in Darnolds favour is cost - neither of them is the QB to take the 'Hawks to the Superbowl.
Ewers seems to choke when the pressure gets turned up. Just for that alone I'd pass. He actually reminds me mentally of Darnold. I personally don't want Cousins, Darnold, or most draft options. I would like to see Jaxon Dart, Dillon Gabrielle or Will Howard. Jax would likely need to be 18 or higher...whereas the latter two could be picked up later I think.
I'm fine with this deal. Geno just makes too many mistakes to be able to rely on him. Save the cap space. Don't overinvest in a new QB. I'd take just about anyone for one year except Aaron Rodgers. Then figure it out in 2026. If they build up the rest of the team well, they won't need a top of the line QB to win.

Great trade if it means build a great OL and defense… stay away from darnold, he showed his true colors in the playoffs … …
I like Geno almost as much as Mike McD and I don’t begrudge him the opportunity for an enormous payday. However, I think QBs are over paid in general. Go Hawks!

Bingo bingo bingo!!!

Lost in all the DK/Geno churn: Ernest Jones has not been extended and legal tampering starts on Monday.
Geno > Cousins or Darnold
Agreed. In talent AND in salary/monetary value.
What meant is that his salary demands and cost is greater than either of those guys, especially Cousins.
Lockett was a no brainer release, Metcalf is not worth 30m a season and I would have been happy to see Smith cut, so a 3rd round and heap load of cap relief is great.

Huard, Wyman, and Shelton are stunned, shocked, and speechless. “I don’t think anybody — anybody — saw this coming.”

Thank you Geno, its been a blast! Go get your bag, glad this could work out for everyone involved.
Getting a 3rd for Geno is great value. I like this move a lot.

Trade for Baker or the Bengals backup?
