I was one of the two that picked Mike MacDonald, not because I wouldn't love to chat with some of those great players from the past, but because I'm more into where the team is in the present than in the past. Two key questions for him.
- he talks about non-negotiables every once in a while. I want to know what they are. What does he look for in players that just has to be there? I have some guesses but I want to hear it from him.
- when I retire in a few years, can I come work for the Seahawks? I'm an IT guy so would absolutely love to work with the Analytics team. That would be a dream job.
Killing Crazy Horse by Bill O’Reilly… Excellent book on Indian Wars and Westward Movement.. Get ready for a lot of horrible treatment of our Native Americans after Civil War.
My choice would be Jim Zorn… I was at the very first game in 1976, and we were very fortunate to have him and his talent and leadership gifts to get our franchise off to a great start! Thank you Jim!
Who's the other person that picked Nick Bellore?! And did you do so for the same reason i did - to find out what blackmail he had on Pete to keep getting crazy contracts!
Sorry I missed that poll. But looking at the results, I am in shock and disbelief that nobody voted for Michael Bennett. Other than Marshawn, he would've been my choice.
I had a few chances to meet Seahawks players when I worked as an Uber driver years ago. The most memorable were:
--Walter Jones - about 45 min in the car during a 2015 preseason game. A conversation I'll never forget. Most memorable line was when he made a comment about Britt being moved to LG and how the best thing that they can do is put the best 2 OL next to each other on the left side. I replied, "yeah, but we'll never have another Big Walt and Hutch" "you know who you got in your car, right?" "Yeah, I know who you are" and kept driving...
--George Fant - 4 times between Bellevue/Factoria and Downtown/Belltown
--Quinton Jefferson - was with Fant once, and another Seahawks player but I don't remember who it was
Others, less memorable:
--Marshawn Lynch - Picked up his publicist/social media guy. Marshawn ordered the ride, so I spoke to him very briefly. No conversation, just "take this guy to the airport", but I did shake his hand.
--Terrell Pryor - Picked up his girlfriend/fiance early in the morning after he was cut, took her to the airport. No real conversation, just instructions.
--Kiero Small -- Picked him up from the airport and dropped him off at VMAC when he reported after being drafted.
Oh. I almost put How to be a Stoic as well, but thought one of the original and great Stoics would be better - Meditations. They go together as a pairing quite well if anyone’s interested.
My first pick was Kam. How can you NOT want to have dinner and visit with Kam!!!
My second pick, and no one else but me seems to care a wiff for.......my fellow Saskatchewan born player.....Jon Ryan!!!! The ONLY Seahawk to ever have competed in American Ninja Warrior!!! And he is the only Seahawk punter ever to throw a TD. And, who can forget his bloodied face after his fake punt against the Rams!!! They make 'em tough in Saskatchewan!!!
american ninja warrior, wow! i wonder if the list of seahawks players on reality competition shows is long enough for seaside joe to write about. we know he’s a reality tv fan! the only other player i can think of is brandon cottom who appeared on season 44 of survivor.
I would bet that is exactly how you'd feel coming out of that discussion. That's what Pete does best. Pete opens up possibilities. That's what he's about.
Luke Wilson was not my first choice, but one of my choices. If you’ve ever seen him interviewed, he really is an entertaining speaker. He knows how to hold your attention, and he played on two Super Bowl teams and has some opinions about it he’s not afraid to talk about.
As far as restaurants you can sit down and have a good atmosphere to have a conversation. I like the Metropolitan Grill and the Butcher’s Table. (Owned by the same person who owns Beecher’s Cheese) I’ll throw in Shucker’s in the Fairmont if you like seafood. But you can get seafood at the other restaurants as well. The king crab legs appetizer at the Butcher’s Table has melted butter with some chile flakes to give it a little heat.
For those of you who had Doug Baldwin on their list (me). Hawkblogger interviewed him on today’s show. Confirming my belief he’s be a great dinner date. Hawkblogger has some great guests and his program is significantly better when he does interviews. He should prioritize that part of his podcast.
The nice thing about blog and podcast interviews is that there’s no 8-10 minute radio restriction, meaning that the guys can stretch out. On Seahawks Man2Man, Mike & Chris give these guys an hour plus. Excellent discussions through the years in particular with Ray Roberts, Quandre Diggs, Cliff Avril, and, of all people, LJ Collier.
I can't think of anyone who could get open on a wheel route any better. He beat the best of the best with that move over and over again. The two that stick out vividly in my memory......
- 1st half in the SB game versus Denver against Champ Bailey. Left side of the formation. Wide open and Russ hits him, although he has to slow up a tad for the throw. Didn't end up in a TD though, and a FG was the result. That's when I knew we had a chance.
- OT against Green Bay the very next year. 3rd down and 7 I think. If we don't get a first down we'll have to punt and give the ball back to Rogers in good field position. A critical play. Right side of the formation, gets an amazing release and is wide open again and Russ hits him for a big first down and puts us in great field position. In the blink of an eye Kearse is in the end zone for a TD. The last 5 minutes of that game were amazing. The look on Aaron Rogers face after the game was priceless.
I remember a play near the goal line when he was split out to the left on his own, he immediately fakes a hard inside release like he’s going over the middle, then breaks outside. The CB bit so hard for his inside move he was open by 25 feet.
I goofed, the book I mentioned was not actually Paper Tiger, it was intended to be Paper LION, by George Plimpton
I was going to put A Confederacy of Dunces for the book but then I forgot...

Cool to see someone else bring it up, The Murderbot Diaries are excellent. I'm avoiding the tv series but loving the books!
Killing Crazy Horse by Bill O’Reilly… Excellent book on Indian Wars and Westward Movement.. Get ready for a lot of horrible treatment of our Native Americans after Civil War.
Try “Huck Out West” (Robert Coover).
My choice would be Jim Zorn… I was at the very first game in 1976, and we were very fortunate to have him and his talent and leadership gifts to get our franchise off to a great start! Thank you Jim!

Bennett character, no doubt.
Terry Brooks and Shannara Series. Right there with Drizzt.

That's Cool, Issac!

Some great book choices there. And I’m always looking for good book recommendations.
I second The Devil In The White City!

Pete Carroll. I did meet him once, but only for about 5 seconds so he wouldn't remember it. After Pete would be Tyler Lockett.
My choice too, but I haven’t met him.
I figure after I had dinner with Pete, I’d be a bit more motivated with the entirety of life.
I would bet that is exactly how you'd feel coming out of that discussion. That's what Pete does best. Pete opens up possibilities. That's what he's about.
Same. I met Pete and interviewed him for about 5 minutes. I have no idea what we said, it was so long ago.
It was one of my favorite articles you wrote at Field Gulls!

Go Doug!
Indeed! I was in awe of his ability to create separation from the defender. As talented an undrafted free agent as there was.
