John Elway declined the Colts many years ago. Eli Manning told the Chargers he wasn't going to play for them and they drafted/traded him in 2004. It can happen but without insane leverage like those examples, there's little choice.
Makes sense. Giving it more thought, if they could decline, probably 75% would not want to play for the teams. They probably show their level of enthusiasm during the pre-draft interviews. Thanks for the clarification :)
What's your prediction of the Hawk's draft position next year? How can you judge McCall's talent when he plays in the Sun Belt conference? Where do you think he'll go in the draft?
Carson Wentz, Trey Lance, Ben Roethlisberger, and so on, there have been quite a few QBs from either FCS programs or really weak conferences to go early in the draft. I don't see that as an issue for teams honestly. He might go on day two, but I will keep pushing him as a first round pick because that's what my heart tells me to do.
Ball-handling is definitely not noticed or valued enough. A fraction of a second along with the running-back having to slow down or twist around makes all he difference whether a play is successful or not. Seeing the oncoming attackers and being able to make (the correct) split-second decision has to be somewhat innate. Son of Color has that down pat.
I think Grayson owes you a future podcast appearance for all the love.
He does look like a really fun player and clearly knows how to win. I remember when Russell was entering the draft and we were just learning about his history. One of the things that stood out was how much he loved winning and seemingly made everyone around him better at their jobs at whatever level he played at. Work on that "zip" Grayson, and go Chanticleers!
We need to talk about McCall's competition. He seems to have good skills, but is he just a big fish in a small pond? How will it translate to NFL comp?
I completely understand that. I'm just watching the current crop of draftees get torched because they "come from small schools", or "faced inferior competition." And film is great to watch as long as you're not excluding weaknesses. All rookies have them. Contrary to popular opinion, nobody comes outta the box perfect, even 7th rounder Tom Brady.
Really not trying to be right. I also really like this kid. I'm just not ready to hand him the Heisman. I just want to know his potential shortcomings, where he can improve, warts and all. I'm not sure the Seahawks are going to be bad enough to be in the market for his services. If they are, I've seen about 4 or 5 others QBs listed. How does McCall stack up?
Competition is a good thing to talk about if the only thing a person does is read box scores. We're watching film. His efficiency stats are bouyed in part because Coastal doesn't paly against many Power 5 schools and I've always been fair in that evaluation. It doesn't make the very long list of QBs who came from non-Power 5 schools and also been successful in the NFL any less notable... being unfairly evaluated as a high school recruit, just as Russell Wilson, Big Ben, Philip Rivers, Aaron Rodgers, Justin Herbert, and on and on, should not come to haunt him forever.
If you watch the film and the GIFs and videos provided at Seaside Joe and still feel that the highlights and plays can only exist for our pleasure because he's facing Louisiana (a 10-1 program that year) then so be it. I encourage commentary that specifically uses the clips above or specifically uses clips that maybe aren't included that explain what issues you see. What issues do you see in those clips? Or maybe some empirical evidence that shows what you mean?
One more question...can a draftee decline to join the team that drafts them?

CASE IN POINT .........How many interviews do you think DK went SHIRTLESS TOO??? lol ( Did he wear a parka to a interview with Detroit ? )
Interesting read (and watch). I hope you have some connections with the Hawks office to also share your study with them.
They will for sure make their own evaluation, but still if you are rooting for the Hawks to see what you see then why not share your study? 😉

I appreciate your questioning of it though...truly...pardon me if I get overprotective of Grayson McCall

Is it against the rules to entice a player to sign before they finish their college career?
Rozone, that thought has crossed my mind several times also.
HAHAHA. The rules seems malleable to anything at this point!
