It is just way too early for this--too many things can have an impact before the end of the season including injuries unfortunately. Trades and contract restructuring can have a big impact on available cap space also. I don't even pretend to understand it but the Seahawks have never been jammed up like (say) the Saints have been when they kept deferring cap problems down the road. The Seahawks are in decent shape now and they will figure it out at the end of the year.

Otoh, how would we like to be AZ tied to Kyler Murray's extension? Or, even worse, the Broncos with $165 guaranteed to Russ?

I appreciate where you and others are coming from, and I also appreciate patience with Seaside Joe as sometimes articles could be helpful in Google search results and sharing Seaside Joe with other Seahawks fans, even if the topic seems "too early" or is not your cup of tea, as I know is the case. Similarly, a good chunk of my readers do not want to read QB Survivor articles like you do, but I continue to cover the 2023 draft for those of us who are interested.

GOES

-Poona is going to be difficult but if one of our top four picks is a defensive tackle it's bye-bye Poona because that's how the NFL works.

-Barton - He can be replaced by a rookie or Jon Rhattigan.

-Bellore - Replaced by Homer

-Penny, Collier, J Jones, Muse, Irvin, Penny Hart

STAYS

-Blythe depends on how much he asks for. He wasn't in demand for 2022. With Haynes moving into the starting spot it will be they won't want to break up the line's cohesiveness.

-Harris is 31 but he would cost $3 million in dead cap and he's producing.

-Homer adds special teams captain to his duties.

-Mike Jackson needs to be signed to an extension.

-Ryan Neal - I really hope we can afford him.

-Myles Adams, Rhattigan, Myers, Johnson Jr.

Many of these calculations can't be made definitively until after the draft. If we get a WR, DT, EDGE, and LB with our top four picks and can find a center in round three it would definitely help our cap.

No can do on Diggs. His dead cap number in 2023 is $8.2 million and $4.1 million is 2024. We're married to Diggs through 2024 and Adams through 2025. Also, we won't have a rookie at guard with Lewis on one side and Haynes on the other. You're right though, I'd like to see Neal on the field. I'm just not sure we'll be able to afford him as a backup. Maybe Neal and Diggs at saftety and Adams at "husky" in some special packages.

Those are are pretty low dead cap numbers for Diggs, feels like we can move on if we need to (he’s going to be 30 in January too). Different matter for Jamal, the dead cap hits are much higher ($21m 2023, $14m for 2024)

I don't think Diggs is a liability, he's just not performing beyond his contract. We'd have to sign Ryan Neal or replace him with a free agent or a rookie. All of those cost money or valuable draft capital. $8 million when we're scrambling to expand our current $3 million sounds like a fortune. We're also going to have to pay Geno.

Cap management is not my cup of tea. I enjoy getting reports, but I'm still working on X's and O's.

We gotta keep Neal. If we commit to Noah Fant on a long term contract, we could reduce his cap hit next year. We can do that with more than a few players if they want. Cap dollars can be created this way and that way, and it seems the bill never comes due, but I suppose it does.

Edit: We cannot let Homer go. He can replace Bellore. He is johhny on the spot at a tremendous rate. Negotiate.

You just keep writing Kenneth, that's what you're good at.

Cap management isn't my thing but I do think Nick Bellore goes. He'll be 34 next year and this season his age has already shown, as I haven't seen him getting downfield nearly as fast as previous seasons. But most importantly, Special Teams have not been great or consistent this year and as ST captain, some of that falls on Bellore.

I also think they might keep Travis Homer around and let Shelby Harris go. I don't think Homer will generate a ton of interest and I'm not confident Walker is ready to be crowned a reliable 3rd down back (I could be wrong). Plus Homer could also easily become the new ST captain. Harris has been good and his quotes are great for PR but I feel like he might get replaced in the draft. It will be between him and Poona to see which they move on from, but at least one of them is history.

I wish I were going to be 34 next year.

Well I guess we think alike. I thought we could replace Bellore with Homer, too. We're going to the SB baby, and Shelby is ecstatic to be on a winner, and he has bought in. I think they can work something out. Same with whoever. This is team. T E A M. They have all bought in, and I think they all feel lucky to be in Seattle.

Got nothing against Shelby but they had no qualms letting Red Bryant walk after the SB and he was a more impactful DT than Harris has been. I'm just trying to look at it the way a GM does, but I'm admittedly probably clueless about that anyway.

I like the more competitive NFL. Dynasties get boring and our culture offers too much of "the richest guy wins" for my blood.

Expand full comment

Yeah, as if we fans get a vote. The owners would never agree.

Personally, I preferred watching football back in the day. Of course it sucked if your team wasn't that good. Seattle was perennially mediocre. Back then, dynasties were not uncommon. By dynasty, I mean a team that was dominant over at least three consecutive seasons. Almost never happens now. Seattle comes as close as anyone in this salary cap era.

Well, let’s not forget about the Patriots.

As close as there's been to a dynasty during the salary cap era. I don't think it qualifies, though. So much of it was based on one guy. Two if you include arguably the best tight end in NFL history. Brady, Gronk and a bunch of pieces that seemed to play their best with Brady under center. Go figure. They were definitely great but not like those San Francisco teams with so many hall of famers on one roster. Heck, they had Montana and Young at the same time. Throw in Jerry Rice, arguably the best WR ever. Ronnie Lott. Roger Craig. Dwight Clark. And on and on. No salary cap so they had them year after year. Now that's a frickin dynasty.

In my book, while Brady may be the GOAT, the two most important—if that’s the word—QBs were Montana and John Unitas.* They changed the way the game was played.

*With a tip of the hat to Dan Fouts.

Unitas. Wow. Nobody talks about him anymore, though he was long considered the best of all time. Color me impressed with your football knowledge.

Since probably everyone here is too young to have actually seen Unitas play, it's easy to see why he's receded into history. Whereas many of us remember Montana.

As for changing the game, that's usually mostly about coaching. Bill Walsh was amazing. A true coaching legend.

When I think of players who changed the game, I think of guys like Lawrence Taylor. The best athletes used to become running backs. Linebackers were big but not particularly athletic. Then Taylor began blowing up QBs. Literally. Destroyed Joe Theismann in a particularly gruesome way. The term "blind side" became a thing. Left tackles became really important. A lot of freak talent began playing the edge (outside linebacker back then) and left tackle. The league began thinking about protecting QBs.

It was a better game then. And the 1972-1979 Steelers would be a dominant franchise today under any set of rules.

Wilson's pool house is almost as large as my entire home. That said, I don't find the interior attractive and wouldn't want to live there. Contemporary design that strikes me as nondescript and lacking in character. But then people can differ as to taste.

Hard to say who stays and who leaves. Salary cap is a bitch. Has a way of leveling the league from season to season. Particularly when a significant portion of one's talent are veterans who need to be re-signed.

It’s kind of fitting that house used to be belong to Kenny G; it has me wondering whether Russ warms up with Kenny G playing in his headphones. It’s just so easy to imagine...

I don't know football as well as most of the people here. I used to watch games on TV in Australia as a teenager and played rugby instead. What I can't tell from watching games is who on this list is a genuine star worth paying and who is a replacement-level player doing well in a good system with good coaching.

I’m okay with moving on from Penny. I want us to draft Texas rb Bijan Robinson with our first (hopefully Broncos) pick. Ben Baldwin’s head will explode and he’s going to be great. Plus nobody lasts a full season at that position. Then we need a wr3, another pass rusher and a couple of fast linebackers who can cover. If we retain our core and add a few pieces, crazy to think how good this team could be.

I also think Bellore goes (retires, actually), but Homer stays as his heir as special teams captain.

Just something I’d like to note:

Seahawks Special Teams DVOA 2022

Games With Homer: 7%, 2nd best

Without Homer: -3.8%, 5th worst

Travis Homer is not going anywhere.
