I'm curious what folks have seen about Patrick O’Connell so far this offseason. He didn't play against TN (maybe suggesting he's a lock for 53), but does he look much better than Chris Paul and Surratt? They both seemed to play pretty well against TN 1s.

I cannot say that I will pound the table for anyone on the cusp. I do worry that Chris Paul and Surratt will get taken on waivers. I thought Danby looked good enough to make some teams, and the rest are disappointments. Cabledue is maybe one I will hate to see cut, too. Sometimes there are veterans that can be cut with the understanding that they will be returned to the team after a week or two on the practice squad to protect young guys that might get snapped up. Other than that, it is still a great looking team with very few weak points. The problem is that ANY weak points get attacked relentlessly and I hope our CB's can hold on this year. Our LBer squad is freaking awesome, and what a luxury to have someone like Wright waiting in the wings, but he may be used as an outside LB on third down and long.

Milroe’s chances of success are small. Nonetheless, unless another team is willing to overpay for him or unless the Seahawks can replace him with a player who can contribute right now, I don’t see the point in moving on. The position is simply too important and too hard to play to not give Milroe another year of development.

Stephen Pitell's avatar

My concern is that there is no example in the history of the NFL when a guy improved enough as much as Milroe needs to improve. One example only is Allen in Buffalo, but he has and had better results than Milroe did while surrounded by 5 star athletes. I get what you are saying, though, and maybe accept that he might even get by waivers and we can keep him on the practice squad. See my above post, and realize we could keep him on the 53 during cut downs, but later see if he can get by waivers. Even if he improved significantly, is he ever going to replace Darnold? My answer is no. Never, or at least for 10 more years. We may not keep Darnold that long, but you get what I am saying. We can take fliers on late round QB's next year when we have plenty of draft capital.

Paul G's avatar

It’s a fair point. Basically, my view is that Milroe will never clear waivers. If he has even a minuscule chance of becoming a productive player, I can’t see the team giving up on him yet because the chances of his roster replacement offering much are small, too.

Now, if Tyson Prince and Jake Peetz say “This guy is hopeless; we’d be better off coaxing Nathan Peterman out of retirement and stashing him on the practice squad,” Milroe is gone. That’s the kind of scenario we’re looking at, though.

Well, nice talking to you, Paul, and it isn't a big deal with me, and I'd love for Milroe to prove everyone wrong, because there are lot's of doubters and rightfully so. It would break a long standing rule for him to become a high percentage passer. Or anywhere near good enough to displace (I'm so old, I am forgetting who our QB is, or what his name is anyway, though it's not all old age affecting my memory right now, anyways ...) Darnold. Yes, Darnold, remember his name, steve. Jaysus, Joseph and Mary. Getting old is so much fun. I used one of those grocery store electric carts the other day, and wow! People were so polite! Exclamation mark. I might use them just for the fun of it. Young people wouldn't get away with that, that's for sure. And it only gets better.

I don’t see Haynes making it. More likely a cut down IOL guy with better prospects for not sucking. Or Cabledue? Could be another outside WR and CB as well. Trade for Joey Porter?

Stephen Pitell's avatar

Have I missed something? Is he available? I am salivating. But we cannot spend that kind of money on the CB position. Not with needing to pay Emmanwori eventually.

Grant Alden's avatar

Porter is claiming back soreness in Pittsburgh, last contract year, wants to get paid. Cost is resigning him, for a Brinks truck, and probably a first round choice. So I read this morning.

Stephen Pitell's avatar

Well, we will only have a lousy first rounder. More like a second rounder. But that will never happen. We might spend big on someone like Verse. Young, with plenty of talent. That's what we could use considering half of our team are growing grey wiskers now.

The only major issue I see is that this list tends to exclude special teams players that aren't specialists. Ie were not getting enough votes for their Off/Def ability and thus they don't get enough votes to be on the roster. Some of our top special treams players,by snaps, last year are missing from this list (not to mention players that were on pace to be top snap getters). I read somewhere lately, I apologize if it was here, but they said put in first team offense and defense and then build your special teams units and by that time you might only have a few selections left- If that. Special teams can't be overlooked. Especially in this team.

Paul G's avatar

I’m at sea on ST guys and how to integrate them as position players. Which is why I didn’t make a projection.

KHammarling's avatar

I just don't see a scenario where we don't have 3 QB's, and as much as apparently the majority will not like it, that QB3 will be Milroe. Darnold is the starter, Lock is the back-up, Milroe continues to be the gadget development. No way are MM/JS going out to get someone else in this far into the pre-season to be QB3. It's Jalen, and we kind of all know he's basically not going to see the field. Certainly you cannot cut him because someone would claim him (he'd be a better option than Watson for the Browns).

For me the hard choice is WR. Horton's status is a problem, but i left him out assuming he'll go to IR and not be needed in the 53. JSN, Kupp, Shaheed are locked. I really feel White is locked, he's the closest replacement to Bobo and can do what we need as WR4 (bit of blocking, bit of ST, 20+ targets across the season would be kind of notable for the wrong reasons). 5 & 6 get tricky. RW3 is fun, Henderson i'm sure is liked but doesn't spark anything for me. Charles & Jones could slide in here as hybrid WR5/6 & ST specialists & hybrid TE/RB (Irv, Velus respectively). When talking about spots 45-53, where we firmly are at WR5/6, you have to be a ST contributor and/or cover two roles.

This is why i'm still confused why people don't pick up on Kallerup as much. Blocking, ST and potential to FB (although i think the "need" for an Outz replacement is a bit over blown, adapted play calls to reduce a need for FB, and dial up the sweeps and motions where that blocking can be done by others). Anyway, he's become my hype guy so definitely bias here.

From what I've seen so far, Milroe should accept a role as a Taysom Hill type of QB/RB. Otherwise, he might not make it in the NFL or be a very little used backup QB. He could be especially useful against a team with a versatile safety/nickel/linebacker like Emmonwori, e.g., playing RB, taking a lateral, and doing a run-pass option. His read would be based on whether the S/NB/LB bought the run. Put JSN in the slot or running a crosser and now you're talking.

Paul G's avatar

Hill was a 63% passer. Does anything about Milroe suggest he can hit even that bar? What I’m getting at is that Hill had success running and receiving because he was a legit threat to pass. Right now, Milroe is not that.

Scott M's avatar

Milroe is fantastic runner, I don't think we let him go if we actually tried to convert him...now that's a project I'm excited about! Milroe RB / TE/CB/returner....just find something but try him everywhere. He's so fast.

Charles R. Dyer's avatar

Egad, we should keep him just so one of our division rivals doesn't take him.

Charles R. Dyer's avatar

Even Bobo with his catch radius would work then, too.

Rusty's avatar

Seriously? Someone thinks Weatherspoon should not make the final roster.

McVey, is that you?

PNWRider's avatar

The list looks pretty accurate. I agree with others Cody white has not real been better this off season. Milroe ? I would not put him on the 53. I think we could get a cut Qb that would maybe better. If not than add him. I doubt anyone will

Pick him up

Stephen Pitell's avatar

I'm reading from newest to oldest and I'm not at the beginning yet, but you are the first I have come across who feels about Milroe as I do. He's easily replaced with someone better. Some even that might push Lock.

For those that want to see Milroe, Diggs or anyone else move to the PS...

The Roster to Practice Squad Process:

Release or Waived: A team must first remove a player from their active roster by terminating their contract or waiving them.

Waiver Clearance: Players with fewer than four accrued seasons must clear the league-wide waiver wire, meaning other teams have a chance to claim their current active contract first.

Clearing Waivers: If no other NFL team claims the player off waivers within the designated window (or if the player has four or more accrued seasons and becomes a free agent immediately), they become a free agent.

Signing to the Practice Squad: Once the player clears waivers or free agency, the original team (or any other team) is free to sign them directly to their practice squad.

Paul G's avatar

Milroe would not clear waivers. If nothing else, the Browns would take him.

Rook's avatar

The question, for me, is more about depth at Receiver, Corner AND Runningback! The Seahawks cannot designate BOTH Horton and NEAL to the PUP/Return List, because they need one of those spots for Zach Charbonnet. Unless they expect to be without Charbs for the entire season (or to include him on the 53), either Horton or Neal needs a roster spot. From our selected 53 (which I disagree with because, IMO, Milroe will not be waived) that means either Brandon Pili, Mike Morris or Noah Igbinoghene goes to the PS. If Milroe is on the 53, Jacardia Wright is not.

Grant's avatar

Agreed. Jarcardia won himself a practice squad spot this preseason, but not a 53-man roster spot. They'll give him another nice audition opportunity in preseason game 3.

Grant's avatar

It's impossible for us to know what to do with Trevon Diggs, because we haven't seen him or heard anything from coaches about him. We just signed him off the street, so is it likely another team claims him off waivers? He didn't make my roster. I'd rather keep AJ Finley for now just because of the injuries to Emmanwori and Clark. We may need him in week 1.

I like Montorie Foster just like everyone else. If Horton starts on IR then I'd want him on the roster over Cody White, at this point. However, it may be more important for us to keep Emmanuel Henderson if he's the best gunner on the team. If we have to choose between the two, I'd let Jay decide instead of Brian.

Lastly, I'd really like to keep Milroe. I feel that Jacardia Wright and Conner O'Toole are both guys that would likely clear waivers and could be added to the ready-squad to make room for him. I feel like voters are putting too much stock in a few stats from the second preseason game instead of considering the likelihood of guys getting snatched up by other teams. Just imagine having to live in a world where Milroe is competing for playing time against Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders. Let's not be that Spiderman movie.

Grant Alden's avatar

I would even buy popcorn for that movie!

Rook's avatar

Thanks for reminding me about O'Toole, I could not agree more. I was typing when you posted, and I forgot to include him in my list of guys headed to the PS.

Sandman's avatar

Keep Hendo and Chazz, add Diggs and Kallerup to PS.

The rest looks good although a vet power guard (Zeitler) would make me happier.

Doug Weller's avatar

Here's my thing with Milroe...... I didn't see him being cut in year two under almost any circumstances. I just didn't see the Hawks drafting him with that kind of expectation. However, what's changed for me is the the math. I'm not sure what JS see in terms of depth at positions where long term injuries have popped up. Depending on the answer to that, Milroe may very well become more expendable. The question is this: is his current and future expected value to the team worth the roster spot he'll be using within the context of the injuries at safety and receiver and the apparent dissatisfaction with the corner depth? At least that's how I see it.

Ferg's avatar

Is having him more important than having Foster Jr, Kallerup, Haynes, O’Toole, Diggs? One single word to consider when assessing a project QB: do we have the depth at all other positions?

Grant Alden's avatar

17 game season, depth at QB matters. I doubt you can pick up a waived QB better than Milroe. Which is, yes, a sad commentary.

IdahoFred's avatar

Go ahead and cut Milroe. Let's make our team stronger to win another SB. I don't think we should use a roster spot for a project this year, especially with some of the injuries we have had. He has one more game to prove me wrong, but I say ready squad time.
