In 2015, Wagner's third year, he had Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Brandon Mebane, Bruce Irvin (28 yrs old), KJ Wright, Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas surrounding him. Wagner's a HOFer so it's unreasonable to expect that of Brooks but do you think he might look a little stronger with that cast around him?

fantasy player game - which of those All-time Seahawks mentioned above would you wish most to place on This current D? - I'll go first: Kam Chancellor's skill-set, leadership and fury would make the biggest difference on this team.

Yes, Brooks would make more tackles closer to the line if he was surrounded by the pack of 'Dogs' that Bobby Wagner had. We got spoiled with an All-time Defense.

Good observation; Adams was intended to fill exactly that role. Our starting defensive linemen are a 36 year old nose tackle, an undraftd free agent, and 7th round, 31 year-old on his third team. It's possible than none of them would start on any other team in the league and they're the ones who are supposed to keep the linebackers clean.

Aw. Your visions are traditionally fantastical and fan-y and we all love it. I predict a petulant game full of insane Seahawks penalties and DK being worthy of his pacifier. (that pacifier: why.). I'm pretty dern sure I've been a fan of this newsletter from the beginning, but I was bummed when my search for the EARLIEST email from Schmenwick Schmarthen was only from 2019. I'm sure there were earlier ones, but here's the earliest Throwback Joe I can offer. Thanks Real Deal Seaside Joe!

A book recommendation from a novice reader

Good morning Seahawks fans and cousin Stevie,

Let me actually keep it short today. I have never done enough reading. This isn't a fact that you can admit to yourself until you really commit to reading. I'm not an authority on what you should read because I have not done enough reading. I can recommend to you a book that worked for me but I can't say that it would be the best possible book that you should read next. In fact, I'm sure there are millions. Did you know that there are a lot of books? Because holy sardines, there are a lot of books. And they're still making them despite moving pictures.

So this might not be the best possible book you could read next, but it was the best possible book that I read last. As far as I could be concerned. "Tools of Titans" by Tim Ferriss is 600+ pages of advice from some of the world's richest, healthiest, and by some definitions, most successful people in the world. It's helped me start a few very easy habits -- or I hope they develop into habits -- and it's the reason that this newsletter exists. I realized that I would be a lot happier if I could connect with my readers on a more regular, more direct, and uninhibited basis. I've had Ferriss's "The 4-Hour Body" on my shelf for years and years now, and now I'm actually going to read it. Now that's powerful, a book so good that it makes you want to read more.

My vision is pretty much the same as last week: just win baby!

It is almost a sure thing the Seahawks will lose which is exactly why Pete’s team has a chance!

Remember the ice bowl vs Minnesota! The weather will be the big equalizer and a KC team looking past Seattle could very easily be surprised.

I certainly do not want to pile on, but Jordan Brooks is still needing to think to much. His confidence is not where you would like to see it, and it only became harder without Bobby. I have a theory that John and Pete allowed Bobby to go, because they didn't expect to be in contention for the playoffs. I think J/P probably pointed this out to Jody in essence giving themselves two years at a rebuild. The salary cap would not have been a problem, cash over cap are the three magic words.

Pacheco posses a problem for Seattle, he looks to be a strong very fast back. My vision Andy Reed gets bored of the run and Diggs and Riq both get ints. I also see Geno playing very well as long as it isint to windy. Geno throws a good enough ball to cut through the wind, but if temperatures and wind chill are as bad as I have seen K9 and DJ need to lead the way. Using Walker from the slot or screens will help the team over all.

Finally a competitive effort will put the Hawks in great position to win their final two games, finish above 500 and make the playoffs.

PS Bobby Wagner is the best linebacker to ever play for Seattle and his HOF resume says he is one of the best to ever play the game

Thank you, Kenneth! I think it's pretty amazing the consistency and discipline to keep this up every single day. I've always admired writers. It's a solitary undertaking. Being a professional writer is not so different from a performing artist such as a working musician or thespian. You gotta bring it every time you go out there. To do it daily is certainly bringing it. It's impressive that you wrote for Field Gulls and now Turf Show Times to doing a self sustaining daily blog. That's some blue collar shit. I'm happy to buy a premium subscription. Hell, I spend more money having a not so great dining experience sometimes at a restaurant. I feel as if I bought into a good cause by helping you support your family and profession. Kudos to you!

So Joe. A teaser about Top Gun was in there, but no comment here. So what do you think now you’ve seen it?

Good wholesome fun I think. And it brought a bit of nostalgia for me, though you’re probably too young for that to occur.

Whoops, sorry, this totally slipped my mind and then we went to Universal Studios.

First of all, I want to make it clear that if Top Gun 2 entertained you and served as an escape from reality for a little more than two hours, far be it from me to say that's undeserved, wrong, unfair, or ridiculous. I want people to go to the movies and to be entertained by the movies and all of our experiences will surely be different. There are offensively bad movies that make no sense to me, but I can see why Top Gun 2 would be enjoyable for some fans, clearly there are a lot of people who feel that way.

Perhaps for me with no nostalgia for Top Gun but also knowing all the references, I felt it to be an overkill of callbacks that I don't care about. That's why I call it Top Gun: Callbacks instead of Top Gun: Maverick. As maybe a 90-minute experience in 3D or 4D, I would see this movie again, with most of the callbacks cut out. But that movie may not have made $1 billion at the box office. As a reference point: Other than Mission Impossible 2, I would rank this movie below any Mission Impossible movie.

I find it nearly impossible to even judge Top Gun 2 as anything other than a movie serving as a sequel to Top Gun. If I was forced to review it, then it felt a lot like a big budget version of Saved by the Bell when they spent the summer at the beach resort. Which again makes the point that if this was Saved by the Bell, I would have liked it more because that's nostalgia I can relate to.

Given that I don't feel that way about Top Gun, I understand why others might be hyped, but I didn't care for all the references to the first movie and would have been fine not seeing it.

I find it interesting how people get different reactions to the same things.

I appreciate your thoughts and understand what you’re saying. I’ve never thought either of the Top Gun movies were that good. Just simple storyline’s that are just easy to watch and a bit of fun. Good wholesome entertainment. The latest being sorely needed in these times of movie-makers shoving agendas in your face constantly.

Just to clarify, it didn’t bring back nostalgia for the actual original movie. It was more about nostalgia for where I was at in life when it came out. I was a teenager during those simpler and fun times (Although I did have a bit of a crush on Meg Ryan 😁).

They were good times.

Merry Christmas to you young man. I hope you can take a bit of a break. You deserve it.

Vision Board for under my 'tree':

For an Appetiser...

1) I see Kenneth Walker with 100 rushing/receiving yards.

For the Mashed potatoes...

2) I see giving up 24 or under points.

For the Rib roast...

3) I see our Hawks collecting 3 or more turn-overs.

And for Pumpkin Pie...

4) I see Geno running for a TD.

Plus, for the After-dinner-nap...

5) I see a Denver loss!

Enjoy your Holiday!

Love that Walker did the deed. He was a Great pick up! I am inclined to draft another stud - have you seen that dude from Georgia - he runs through the line and Blows Up the safety - KAYAH!! It is hilarious watching the poor DBs make business decisions after meeting up...

For Christmas, Santa can still deliver - a Denver loss remains a possibility!

First, I can't recall there ever being what I'd call a dud article on Seaside Joe. A groaner or two of a title maybe, but not a bad article.

Second: "Through 45 career games, Brooks has zero interceptions, one forced fumble, 14 tackles for a loss, six QB hits, and two sacks." Those are some pretty disappointing numbers over a lot of football games. I'd be curious to see how Barton, everyone's whipping boy, is on track to do. Whenever Tanner Muse comes in; watch Barton. He yells and points demonstrably more snaps than not. Makes me wonder if Muse doesn't know where to line up, or if Barton is just one of those teammates.

I actually like Barton. I think he just needs more time.

I don't see the instincts, the feel that exceeds coaching. He's not a bad player; I just don't think he's a starter on an excellent defense. I'd love to see him prove otherwise.

Expand full comment

I hope he will improve with time. At worst, he was a really good special teams player, or at least jumped out at me several times there before he began starting on defense. People act like he's the worst player on the team, and I just don't see that. Heck, Quandre Diggs -who inexplicably made the Pro Bowl -might even be my choice for that this season; in spite of catching a couple of the interceptions thrown right at him. In addition to dropping picks my dog could catch, I've seen bad angles and piss poor effort on some tackles from Diggs this season. I see no way he isn't a cut at his salary. I'm sure last year's brutal injury is part of it, but to my eye he is playing mostly sorry, unsound football. I can't pretend to tell what the DB assignments are from play to play, because the NFL is nothing like the HS game, much less the 1980's HS game. But I know effort and tackling technique when I see it and I've seen far too little of it from Diggs. He's far and away my biggest disappointment of of the season, not counting Adams' injury and such. He looked like a whole different player last year, and I have to think he hasn't had time to heal properly. But if Diggs wasn't ready to go, he shouldn't have been put on the field, though. Or resigned for that contract.

I'll say it again... draft Branch or any instinctive free safety with the speed to play single high and drop Diggs into the box as the nickel.

I guess every player is allowed to have an off sort of season. Not sure what it is about Diggs this season, but as you basically said, he hasn’t been the player he was, it seems. It doesn’t help when the D is off as a whole at the moment. Hopefully they can turn it around from here on in.

I'm not football savvy enough to make the analysis, but it seems that Shanahan is much more creative in the run game. Of course, it helps to have Trent Williams, likely the game's best left tackle. Cross' PFF run block rating is 57.6 and Williams' is 94.1. And you're right, it does seem like we've gone to the tight ends less recently.
