I am always a day late making comments because I read the news, including SSJ, first thing in the morning.
There was an article a while back, perhaps in The Athletic, describing how the Eagles have their best players on long-term contracts with a lot of void years that end in 2029. The reasoning is that the NFL is going to be signing new agreements with the TV/streaming services in 2030, and there will be a lot more money coming to owners after that. So basically, the Eagles are kicking their cap problems down the road so they can keep their team together for several years.
It may be that JS is saving cap money this year in order to write big contracts for the guys they want to keep long-term in a manner similar to the Eagles. Shorter contracts for those guys they are not completely sure of yet. So the upcoming contract negotiations will have even bigger implications than we might think. It'll be very interesting if that is the case.
I've been wearing a different Seahawk shirt every day, wore my Seahawk socks, got my Seahawk hat on......trying to send some juice to the team. Jersey will go on on Sunday.
Yeah, you cannot make those kinds of changes to a rookie contract. They are fixed. All teams can do is negotiate guarantees (as we saw a lot of new about this year), and cut players. The actual wages and duration's are fixed and cannot be changed. This is enshrined in the CBA (say thank you to Sam Bradford, JaMarcus Russell, Eli Manning and others for Rookie deals to be the way they currently are) and is kind of a significant piece of bedrock on which the modern NFL is built. When the next CBA is negotiated we will see changes to Rookie contracts i'm sure, with the push against guarantees from Owners and push for them from Rookies coming to a head sooner than later. I don't think we'll see anything that affects duration's and/or ability to "tear up" a rookie deal early for a bigger cheque.
When we talk about extension, really we're talking about brand new contracts (the play just happens to extend their stay on the team). When it comes to extension on veterans then you have some more flex to tear up an old deal early, but even then it's pretty uncommon as teams & players would need to agree a compensation deal based on the old contract - and when would any GM/Owner willingly pay that much more for a player who was already locked in.
Bryant next makes a lot of sense to me. I said as much before. He's versatile, solid, and comparatively cheap. He also does not have a massive market waiting to snap him up. Get a solid deal done that sets Coby up for life, but is still team friendly.
I replied to yesterday's post but it looks like I blew it (still better than Barnwell tho, ha.)
The Athletic reported that "Lucas...was entering the final year of his rookie contract and slated to carry a salary-cap hit of $3.6 million" and I took that use of the past tense to mean this deal would start now and replace that final year of his rookie contract. However, I didn't see that later on in the article it claims the extension runs through the 2028 season.
Re: the other 2022 extensions, if we can lock up Walker for the Chuba deal and Woolen for the McCollum deal I say we do it. Extending K9 now also likely reduces Charbonnet's leverage next year if both have good seasons. Coby is great but we can see how the season plays out with Emmanwori before extending him. Mafe would be the player I'd be trying to extend now over any of these three, tho.
Wait till we see if K9 can stay healthy, then franchise tag him and trade him if he gets 1500 yards or more. Or come to some agreement on a contract. A great running back is not so easy to find. If he gets injured again we can let him reach free agency and move on for a late compensation pick. He needs to be available for the playoffs or move on.
Colby and Wooten should be next. The strength of the team is the defense. Walker I have to see he is not Penny 2.0. Charbonnet from all reports I heard looked very good. So o would see what Walker does.
Agreed. Colby and Love, I don't want to break that up. I hope he wants to sign. Woolen, I doubt we can afford him next year, but he is sure good. I expect him to ball out this year.
Spoon over Woolen. Charbs over Walker. We can't pay both in either scenario, so we'll have to choose one or the other (I think). Bryant I can see getting on a reasonable deal, but no where near top of market. Teams need to make choices, and 'we'll sign everyone' is not a reasonable expectation.
I would have wagered Coby would be the most likely next extension before I read this article. He's not a superstar, but wouldn't be paid like one and he seems to have some room to develop still.
I love Walker when he's on the field, but I'm not sure he's ever going to be durable. Rashaad Penny probably broke me, but what will be interesting is whether or not he broke Schnieder.
*I* wouldn't extend Woolen yet, but I am slow to fogive guys who tackle far worse than Aaron Rodgers when someone is returning an INT (not a total diss, I saw Rodgers lay some wood a couple of times in his career). He's just so quick and fast, long and athletic, and I had such high hopes during his rookie season that he would be an All Pro, and then I watched him look like Tyler Lockett when it came time to make contact. Not to mention multiple reports of him not always having his head in the game.
I'm bummed that 'Chenna is out for Sunday. I was hoping he might be the X factor people had forgotten about. Special teams will miss Bobo AND Young. Wow that stinks. I hope the X factor doesn't wind up being our poor coverage units.
With you all the way and in SJs prior polls on this that’s how I leaned. Coby I think is worth a bunch after seeing his growth. Having that deep guy who is smart, quick, and can tackle (ET if not the ET crushing blows) gives the defense a lot more freedom. NT taking up multiple blockers. FS fast enough to own the whole deep field, frees up the other 9 to scheme. Love Abe signed. Hope that’s also a representation of the doctors thoughts on his knee too. Lastly, yes really sucks 2 critical ST players out. I was so looking forward to seeing ST improvement. Now it’s a concern.
It kills me that we have such a good punter and find ourselves hoping we never have to use him. I'm going to worry every time I see Dickson take the field tomorrow. I can only pray for the absurd, such as we were disguising our real coverage plans or he's been working on his uncatchable "Tasmanian wombat fair dinkum knuckler" punt in the offseason that will take everyone by surprise.
Coby is an interesting case. He and Love seem so similar. They're built like free safeties, but have both played plenty of strong safety and nickel (though not as well). Their versatility makes them almost interchangeable, and having them both on the field together makes our defense less predictable. Emmanwori is a totally different kind of athlete with, for now, a different role to play. It seems like MM wants to have three starting safeties to run his defensive, so maybe this is a case where the Seahawks will buck the trends seen elsewhere in the league.
I think Coby is worth re-signing as successfully playing 3 safety sets against the run is super powerful if you can do it & I don't think he will be asking for pro bowler money. However, the idea that he was our starting nickel three years ago & was really good at it and now he would be 3rd on the depth chart, is kind of crazy when you think about it. This defense has changed so much in such a short amount of time.
I'll always liked Coby and hope it works out. Even when he's struggled in coverage or with his consistency, he's had a knack for making big plays. He just keeps getting better, and you hate to lose a guy that you know hasn't plateaued yet.
I think there is a significant difference between Abe & Ken's injury histories. Abe's injury is the same injury & a single event that impacted two seasons.
Ken has had a hernia, oblique strain, calf & various ankle issues in his 4 years.
Seattle apparently feels confidant that the ONE thing holding Abe back is addressed.
Meanwhile, the multitude of issues with Ken are ongoing.
I want to sneak in here and say we are going to be awed with what K9 unleashes when he has effective blocking working for him. His injuries are a direct result of the lack of blocking in these last few years. I'm seeing at least one rushing TD and I'm being conservative. Slow down, Son, let the Defense rest...
He has the talent , but question is cane he play effectively banged up ? Remember when Adrian Peterson had a talk(s) with Penny about playing hurt ? I see a lot of similarities with Walker.
Coaches know what we have. SF is about to get a rude awakening as will every DC we will face this season. If there exists any fragility, then have Charbs start and soften things up. Might be good for our young Linemen to get a feel for who they are up against. Bring Ken in for the second half. I'm seeing Beastquake-level runs if he's back up to speed. The only downside is finding ways to let our Defense rest a bit. K9 is a HOF level athlete.
Man I’m so glad you posted the Yards Before Contact difference between Cook and Walker.
If you take that 0.9 and apply it to all of Cook’s carries, that’s an addl 480 yds for Walker. Which would take him to 3007 yds or slightly over 5 yds/carry. Higher than Cook without even applying it to all of Walker’s carries (which you could do). Seems the best way to offset Cook’s advantages of playing behind a better OL and alongside an MVP-caliber dual-threat QB.
But perhaps some context on what a 5ypc achievement would be. Thanks to our friends at ChatGPT, pro football reference and ESPN, here’s the list of RB’s with 5+ ypc since 2022, with at least 450 carries (150 carries/yr prob means #1 back but is arbitrary:
5.0 or more: Kenneth Walker w/Cook’s yds before contact
4.9 McCaffrey
Cook
4.8 Henry
Barkley
Aaron Jones
4.7. Conner
Bijay Robinson
4.6 Breece Hall
Jonathan Taylor
4.5. Kyren Williams
4.4. Tony Pollard
Chuba Hubbard
D’Andre Swift
Tyler Allgeier
4.3. Josh Jacobs
David Montgomery
Rhamondre Stevenson
Devin Singletary
4.2. Travis Etienne
Kenneth Walker actual
4.1. Brian Robinson
4.0. Joe Mixon
Alvin Kamara.
Could equalize all these guys for 2.7 yards before contact I guess but regardless, you’d argue SIGN WALKER III bc the risks are very high he’ll do better than his career avg and there are some expensive names above him.

Also, drinking coffee out of my Seahawks mug.
Hmmm. Thinking of marketing "SEAHAWKS WERE HERE!" magnetic bird splaterings. Decals. Look good on Niner helmets...
Best marketing idea I've heard in a long time.

Not sure about Walker, we'll see on Sunday, but agree with the rest.

Agree on Woolen. I am troubled for why he had to be sat out for a game.
Under Carroll and Mike Mac, no less.
It's a huge signal from them to the Team, as is trading up to get Emmanwari. Dead serious stuff, Tariq.

I have the same concern with special teams missing two of our best coverage/effort guys. Let's avoid punting in this one and just focus on kickoffs.

Love that Coby always is looking to get PHYSICAL in a hat-tip to our LOB kind of way. Keep it going, Cobe!
Love it. Just posted similar above in response to Chuck.

Plus, once a running back gets a head-of-steam going he's much harder to bring down with all of that momentum. K-9 + Go Big Mo !
Don't forget Cody White
Bobo and Young are both out? Lots of short passes to the TEs and RBs. Maybe Tory Horton gets a game ball?
Maybe Arroyo takes some snaps as an X wide out.
Seems more likely. White III elevation?
