The circumference of the Earth is just under 25,000 miles and the greatest distance between any two cities, according to Wikipedia, is 12,425 miles. That’s how far you’d have to go to get from Xinghua, China to Rosario Argentina.

Well, the greatest distance between any of you who responded to last week’s survey about where Seahawks fans who read this newsletter are from to the home of the Seattle Seahawks is not that much shorter of a trip.

10,200 miles!

When I created the survey, I didn’t have any plan. I just want to know your stories. When I made The Longest Yard Contest, I didn’t have any plan. I was curious to find out which fan who reads this newsletter is the farthest away from “the team” they follow.

If that fan is you, I want to hear your story. I think we all do.

It took me a lot longer to gather the results than I anticipated. It wasn’t much more than doing a lot of Google searches, but hundreds of people replied and the time to click adds up.

In case you missed it, the original survey answers were previously posted.

The season is almost here and I hope to reach our next subscriber milestone before Week 1, so if you enjoy this newsletter and have the means to support for $5 per month, please sign up today! And tell Seahawks fans about us…you never know where you’ll find them.

Everybody closer than Europe

Thank you to everyone who replied to the survey, whether you entered a city in the longest yard contest or not. It was very interesting to see the results and find out that most of you are not in Washington at all! And that many of you have been following the team since ‘76.

If you entered your city and it was located somewhere in America, I didn’t look up how far you were from Seattle. But thanks for your answers!

The same goes for Canada and the one person who said they live in Mexico. I just had to cut down on my research time as much as possible.

England to 5,000 miles

At first, I was calculating the distance of each city in the U.K., but I soon realized that was not going to even be in the top-10. Two of you said you live in London, one each in Birgmingham, Wiltshire, and Cambridge. I stopped counting the cities after that, but there were a total of 10 people from the U.K..

Two people responded with a city in Sweden (Gothenburg, Stockholm), one person is from Denmark, another from Helsinki, and that completed Europe. Also between 4,500-5,000 miles were Nagano City and Osaka in Japan, Hamburg, Germany, and two people live in Paris. A slightly farther fan in France lives in Marseille.

5,000-6,000 miles

Berlin, Germany: 5,041 miles
Großeicholzheim, Germany: 5,133 miles
Dresden, Germany: 5,137 miles
Karlsruhe, Germany (x2): 5,138 miles
Valladolid, Spain: 5,185
Vienna, Austria: 5,365
Marseilles, France: 5,411 miles
Cardiz, Spain: 5,412 miles
Piegaro, Italy: 5,587 miles
San Terenziano, Italy: 5,602
Belgrade, Serbia: 5,611 miles

That’s right, two of you are from Karlsruhe, Germany. I thought maybe it was a double answer, but one person answered that they started following the team in the Knox era, while the other answered the Pete era.

I have no idea how far things are apart from each other, especially cities, so I had no idea if maybe Serbia was super far from Seattle. It is, but relatively speaking this was not even close to the longest yard.

6,000-7,000 miles

Athens, Greece: 6,051 miles
Santiago, Chile: 6,445 miles
Mendoza, Argentina: 6,469 miles
Uberlandia, Brazil: 6,469 miles
Hong Kong: 6,467
Itabaiana, Brazil: 6,524
Sao Paulo, Brazil (x2) : 6,780 miles
Florianopolis, Brazil (x2): 6,911 miles
Kathmandu, Nepal: 6,951 miles

That’s right, six of you are in Brazil! At least, this is just people who replied to the survey.

And apparently a place with the coolest name in this entire game show—Uberlandia, which sounds like a board game in itself—is the exact same distance from Seattle as Mendoza, Argentina.

If someone had said, “Wow, you have a reader in Nepal. That’s gotta be the winner!” I would have agreed and stamped the prize then and there. Still not even close.

Semi-Finals

Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia: 7,327 miles
Christchurch, New Zealand: 7,430 miles
Sydney, Australia (x2) : 7,744 miles
Singapore: 8,059 miles

Early on I noticed someone write in New Zealand and I kept expecting that to be the winner. Not. Even. Close!

Hello to Sauda Arabia, New Zealand, Sydney, and Singapore. Technically if the person from Singapore had won, I would not have qualified the answer because that fan says they no longer live there. They’re from there. Since it’s not the winner, I can count it though and it nearly won. Singapore came in third place.

Melbourne, Australia: 8,186 miles

I have a bond with Australia. I went there a few times growing up because that’s where my father lived at the time, in Brisbane. I didn’t know that Melbourne would be quite a bit farther (Dear Freud, I accidentally wrote “father” at first) than Sydney. If any of you live in Perth, you might have almost won: Perth is 9,240 miles from Seattle.

But even that is still almost 1,000 miles away from the Longest Yard winner.

Over twice as far as Berlin. Should the Seahawks play a home game in Cape Town as their next International trip?

Brilliant - SSJoe being SSJoe, he’s at his best squeezing entertaining analysis from whatever room or group in which he finds himself (solid grammar, right?). I did NOT understand those distances, 12 k between the abstract most distant cities and you found 10+!

Thanks for another great missive, I look forward to the origin stories countdown from five to one (sorry six!).

I cheated and put Florianópolis to stand a chance. I left Florianópolis 8 years ago and moved (check your notes) 6,911 miles north-northwest to Seattle.

I got to Seattle in September, right on time to follow my first Seahawks season (I didn't understand football at all, except very few things I picked up watching the Marino Dolphins when I was a kid in Brazil).

So I started following the Seahawks in 2015, so I never watched the team live on a Super Bowl. The first moment I remember was the beating the Panthers gave us that season.
