I voted that Love would play more than Adams, but honestly it was only because I am still a little gun-shy about Adams possibly not being ready or getting hurt again. I don't claim to know or want to guess the future, so my vote was one out of concern/fear for Jamal's health.

Trying to stay calm over here, now that Al Woods got released. He was our best run-stopper on the DL and our only true NT. I'm anxiously awaiting Seaside Joe's word on the move, while repeating my calming mantra... "trust them, trust them. Trust. Them."

The release of Woods raises the question are the Seahawks going back to a 4/3?

I'm betting we get our ILB at 5 or 20. Other than OL and pass rusher, ILB has been one position that PCJS draft relatively high. Brooks in the 1st, Bobby in the 2nd. And we definitely need one. Ideally we should have 2 in our 3-4, and right now we have a half of one in an injured Brooks. Maybe Bush winds up being another one, but I think PCJS will reach for their guy this year and not blink an eye when tye 'experts' call them out on it. The only thing I don't know is if they like any of the ILBs coming out this year.

Simpson, Sanders, To'oTo'o, Campbell are all worthy of grabbing in the 2nd. I'd take Simpson, Sanders and To'oTo'o at #20 (but i know a lot of 'experts' would say that's a reach, but it's a weak and shallow LB class and going early to bag one of the only couple of NFL calibre ones makes sense).

Sanders looks better on tape than he does in isolate drills, but is a bit more OLB than ILB. To'oTo'o looked awesome at the Combine, super controlled and smooth, and his tape is solid if not spectacular. Simpson the all-round, tests well, tape is good, no real complaints but just doesn't excite you (although frankly just a rock solid reliable ILB would be lovely). Campbell is excellent in coverage, he's smart and reads the game better than the others, and his testing numbers where above expectation. Downside might be overall speed/strength at the next level, but if you paired him with Brooks/Bush who can fly around whilst Jack sits off you'd make the most of him.

I also know a lot of people really like Pappoe, great Athelete, unconvinced as a football player. Anfernee Oriji is rising but is more a Day3, woops we missed on everyone else, pickup. Sewell is just too slow for me. Henley is trending up, i get why some people hype him, i'm not sure. Same for Pace. Both are a clear step from the Top4 in my eyes.

I love your insights and knowledge, but I disagree about the center position. The center is vital to an effective O line and I feel #38 or #53 will be the positions to fulfill our center needs for the next 8 to 10 seasons. Please get a good center with another guard selection to shore up that O line.

For sure Larry. I’m not sure if we disagree. I am more pointing to Pete’s 13-year history at center and using that as seattles value.

I understand what you are saying and I hope Pete changes his Center philosophy . We have not had a great center since we traded him to the Saints for Jimmy Graham, and our running game has been affected ever since. Protect Geno with good O line play.

If Pete has budgeted to spend as much $ on C this year as he did last year, then Brown’s contract does open up seattle to spend a second round pick worth on it

Thanks for sharing the video. I think this is a great opportunity for Brown to start. He was behind Frank Ragnow in Detroit and played well with a 72 PFF grade in pass pro. He only gave up 8 pressures, 1.76%. Anything under 2.5% is good. He ran a 4.46 short shuttle at the combine which is excellent.

At the end of the season, Pete acknowledged that the front seven needed an upgrade, Looking at the Seahawk’s free agency signings and releases, it appears to me that the Seahawks concluded that the front seven didn’t just need a few couple of additional players but a complete overhaul. Given that the Seahawks are clearly completely overhauling the front seven, it is not realistic that the Seahawks could remake the front 7 using the draft alone, so I think it is a stretch to try to anticipate their future moves based on what we have seen to date.

I forgot to mention that Pete Carroll must see a lot of good in Drew Lock. This makes it even harder to figure if we draft a QB. I mentioned I like Hendon Hooker at 20, I see a good brain for the game, a high-end arm, and he can run some. I would be very happy if we somehow got B Robinson to be a running mate with K9. I don't see that at 5 more, like 20, but who knows. Two very good young runningbacks would be great. DJ Dallas and our late season kick returner, who I don't know how to spell his name, so I won't butcher it to round out that room.

I am so lost on Hooker - it's all about how much that ACL tear affects him. Without that, he's easy QB3 in this class and a nailed on 1st Rd pick (watch his game tape, none of the downsides or inaccuracies of Levis or AR with all of the processing and arm power and touch). To take someone who's only 14months younger than Lock (!) and will not only be redshirted for a year, but only get into training a few weeks/months into the season is a gamble. #20 is a tad rich for my liking, however if he's still sitting there at #52 I would pull the trigger (but probably someone would get in ahead of us in the 40's - looking at you New Orleans!)

I came back from an ACL tear to play rugby in 1990. The QB position is safer and easier to bounce back. Every good QB that's had it seems to have come right back

Joe Burrow was the latest. Apparently, there was no extra damage to Hooker, but I don't have official records. It seems a stretch he would last until 20, but who knows

I can understand why Jalen Carter was out of shape for his pro day. The young man has just lost a friend in a terrible accident. What I don't understand is why did his agent let him try. It may not but, this could cost him millions of dollars. The Seahawks will have the inside knowledge. I just think there is more to it when the can't miss ,stud, can't get through half of a very easy practice.

I like Hendon Hooker at pick 20, I don't have the info to say who we should take at 5. A starting guard in this draft would be great. I will also be happy with a high-end runningback, likely early round 2. Love is a good player, I also believe Adams will be with us next year. Love is a player that will allow Seattle to stay with their defensive scheme, if Adams can't comeback or gets hurt again. Last year was meant to be the year of the big safety. When Adams got hurt it changed our defensive plans greatly. Adams suffered a very serious injury. He tore the quad from the bone, something I have never heard of. I have always liked Jamal Adams as I do Rashaad Penny, let's cross our fingers he comes back healthy, he is a difference maker. Try Lewis at center if Brown doesn't work out, that's a random thought, that makes another guard so important. Jason Meyers is a very good kicker, as is Dickson. It shows how important the kicking game is. As a pair the two would rank near the top of the league.

Will have more to say on it eventually but taking a lot of time to consider all the factors. It’s reasonable to believe that Pete and John would say “we vetted him” if that’s the direction they end up going in.

Havn't seen news on PC/JS calling him as a Top30 visit - which would lean me away from picking him. One interview at the Combine doesn't cover the questions around Carter, especially after that Pro Day show. If a team is genuinely interested in Carter, they must be getting him in for a visit and another deep deep interview. (Bears have a Top30 with Carter, and i've not seen anyone else - at #9 they feel he'll be available and are doing due diligence accordingly. And Steelers i've seen mentioned, but nothing official about a visit, which would be #17 or #32)

Expand full comment
Kastnjl's avatar

I'd be careful about not reading too much into which people they invite for visits. The draft and free agency is one big game of poker. They can't always show themselves too interested in a player, especially if they think other teams will benefit from knowledge of who the Hawks like.

KHammarling's avatar

Why i put the emphasis on doing due diligence on the specific question marks - We know they're not bringing in Anderson for example, there's nothing more to gain knowledge wise there. But Carter, those question marks continue to swirl, and after the Pro Day have only grown. For a front office and HC that put so much square and firm emphasis on character, either then have to talk more with Carter, or they are just not interested in him.

I'm sure there's other interested teams outside the Bears and Steelers and talent will override a lot of concerns for various fans and media exports. But it's like this, do you want Bo Callaghan? Or do you want Vonte Mack? And Jalen, well the party and attitude comparisons only get worse...

Point taken. Age was a concern for your QB in the past. Now a days QBs can play a lot longer. I played premier rugby for 14 years. I was 23 before I was confident at 27 I had 0 worries, but how to win the game. There is nowhere to hide in rugby, and the pay was not there to keep going. I had an ACL tear and came back. I don't know if I am right about Hooker, but I feel as you do, he has all the tools and brains. I just can't see NFL teams passing on him 31 times. Luckily, the Dolphins aren't picking. It is possible Pete thinks Loch is the next good Seahawk QB. I have to give Pete credit he knows how to get players to play their best. On the other side we hired the QB coach who is very good with rookies. Joe pointed to his record in that area. So I know nothing. Don't you wish you could sit through the meetings and get to know what John and Pete know. It's not like making sausage I assume.

My feelings about how your estimations have been so far can be summed up in 2 words.... New. Subscriber.

Like most, I don't give my money away lightly. I have been known, on more than one occassion, to drive away from a fast food window with my van full of 6 kids before getting our food, because of the attitude of the employee at said window. Just because I demand to get service for my money and have the payee speak with respect for me doing so. You know, basic common customer service. I wasn't rude or angry. I just drove off, without blinking an eye, and told my kids exactly why. I then cruised on down the road to the next establishment who would value my time and money.

After thoroughly checking out your menu, I happily forked over my subscription fee and have been enjoying the daily delicious meals you cook up with love and appreciation for your paying customer... Me and my 12-dom.

5-stars on Yelp. Try the veal.

Is Dre’Mont Jones as good as a first round pick? In my opinion - yes.

This is because he is hitting the right age in the NFL. It is pretty rare to have a rookie DLineman (almost no matter how high) make a big impact right away.

If they were serious about Allen (and still have the cap space) we saw two day 1 trades last year. Could the hawks trade a pick for a player? Seems doubtful but I would certainly be interested in exploring that option especially if the player is still on a rookie deal.

Ray's avatar

So you're thinking Dre'mont Jones is roughly the same as having an extra late first/early second-round draft pick, Julian Love frees up a third-round pick, Evan Brown is worth an extra day three pick but would take a much higher pick to upgrade, and all the other guys are just JAG's? I'm OK with that. It sounds like a good off-season to me thus far.

Taking the first kicker off the board never seems to work? Ask our friends in Detroit how drafting that kid from WSU worked out. Sometimes magic happens.

Hey Joe -

Speaking of first kickers off the board and that sort of thing: Jason Hanson lasted for 21 years in Detroit. How would the Vet. Minimum Salary effect his contract value in todays NFL world? Would a kicker drafted next month even have a chance to be on the team in 20 years no matter how good a kicker he was?

Conventional wisdom after the first week of free agency is that Seattle can go bpa in this draft having used FA to plug critical holes with players who can start. PCJS have enough picks that they should be able to add good football players without worrying about position. They can go in almost any direction in the first two rounds which makes this draft very exciting. No one knows what they’ll do and frankly I haven’t a clue!
