Mock drafts are an exercise in Futility- Fun maybe - interesting ,Yes. But the only point in all of it those is to pay attention year to year on those that actually do their homework. I actually liked the old days when I would but Multiple mags and read the actually scouting reports from pro and college scouts. Found it way more informative and usually way more accurate . Plus allot more enjoyable!
My father has a PhD in Forest meteorology. These days that would be climate science. But in the 70s and 80s it was meteorology, and because he had a PhD in meteorology the towns, people where I lived would ask him when there was a chance of snow - Lloyd is going to snow? He would always answer yes. At some point I ask him why do you always say it’s going to snow? Do you really think it’s going to snow he answered no I really don’t know whether it will snow or not. I study weather in hundred year increments I don’t predict tomorrow so I really don’t know. So I said OK why don’t you just tell him you don’t know. He said people don’t want to hear that they want to know whether there is going to be a snow storm or not. I next asked - so why do you tell them yes. And he said snowstorms a big event. People remember snow storms so if I told them there is going to be a snow storm people remember that I was right. But if it doesn’t snow, that is a non-event. Nobody’s gonna remember the day it didn’t snow, so they quickly forget that I was wrong and next year, they will ask me again. What I realize now is my father, and figured out how to mock quarterbacks years it before it became an Internet/ cable sports obsession. Just like a snow storm, drafting a quarterback in the first round is a big event for every fan of the team, and the mock draft industry capitalizes on the excitement and fear and loathing around it. If the prognosticators are right everyone remembers. If they are wrong it is a non-event and everyone moves on till next year. For Seahawks fans the Russel Wilson years were like if growing up in Florida were nobody thinks about whether it will snow. Well we have moved to Seattle now and we all care about a snowstorm hitting the city. So even though we don’t think it is likely to happen we all care and we all pay attention.
They're worthless for predictions, but I like to look and see who they have Seattle drafting as a starting point for researching guys that could be interesting picks. But yeah, they are definitely worthless for information on who will draft who.
Yeah, it's a good way to see who might be available, and then to learn about those guys. I'm just more of a wait and see who the Hawks draft guy, and then get as much info about those guys as I can.
Feels like this is proof that "mockers" tend to overdraft QBs relative to reality. I don't think this is always true (example: the 2011 draft when Locker went surprisingly 8th, Gabbert 10th and Ponder 12th), but last year's draft (as noted in the article/links) was so horrendously wrong. This year will be interesting. I think Stroud and Young will be 1-2 (in some order) but Richardson and Levis will be interesting to see if they go much later than predicted (like last year's QB crop), too high relative to their actual chance to succeed (2011), or somewhere in the middle (either drafted later than predicted or kill the teams that drafted them so high).
Just to emphasize one point...the article from Seaside Joe shows how wrong last year's mocks were...but reality is they were showing Willis and Corral to go so much higher than they ended up going. Isn't this an argument that mocks may be overstating how high Richardson, Levis, and Hooker might go (which, with respect to Hooker, seems to be counter to the main argument)?
Kenneth points out the same thing happened in 2013, so it's not a recent phenomenon. Anyway, I just feel like all this talk of Richardson, Levis, and now Hooker going so early is the group think on QBs than happened last year (and in 2013). It's not an argument that Hooker could go 5th...it's more an argument that Richardson and Levis (and, now, Hooker) could go a lot later than mocks currently predict.
"This would be a shocking first-round pick.... one of the more shocking high first-round picks in my history at 45 years."- Mel Kiper Jr.
What? Does Kiper not understand the meaning of the word shocked? Or is he so used to being shocked every year that he has become numb? Absolutely hilarious response from a guy that has been in the draft world for a long time. These types of things happen ... not once in awhile ... but every year!
It's so interesting to say "Most shocked in 45 years" if a QB goes maybe 30 spots higher than expected, but not to be shocked that he was wrong byo 60+ spots on Malik.
I think what's shocking is that something said by any of the mock draft guys would make any difference to any regular Joe Fan of any team in the league. I get that all the draft guys are in a publicity based business, so of course Kiper is shocked and outraged at what another draft guy says, but I don't know why any normal person cares what any of those guys think. It's all kind of interesting, sort of, but none of it reality based. I'm more interested in the draft grades are assigned to the teams even before the last players are drafted.
I had not watched the Florida game, so that was a good bonus. For the fifth or sixth time I will say I like Hendon Hooker. Does this mean he will be good in the NFL, who knows. A couple of years ago I wrote Joe that I wanted the Hawks to draft Dee Eskridge. What I liked he is built like a runningback and can fly. A serious concussion an injury has kept him off the trust tree, maybe this year, a big maybe. What I have liked about Hooker is he makes the layups he has a strong arm and can run. I can't see watching Hookers tape and Will Levi's tape and how "Rob "Stanton" would side with Levi's. There is a weak argument his guys were open, as he said that's not his fault. By the way if you watched the breakdown, I think Hooker threw away the fade route to the corner. He kind of reminds me of our G Smith. People forget going into year 3 Geno was looking OKish and then got his jaw broken over $600. Hooker can THINK run and throw plus he has two years of being a starter. Over those two years you can see him improve. I like the excitement of Anthony Richardson. My analogy for him is a pro boxer getting a heavy weight title shot after ten bouts. He has a punchers chance. It could make him better so that by 20 fights he might have it or it could crush him. The other thing how does he get better playing 3 pre season games and scrimmages. I would love to see him make it on any team as he is electric. The Hawks may have the choice of either player, neither starts 2023 for different reasons. What pressure P/J face. If you pass on one or both and one becomes a star yikes. If they do pass it says a lot about Geno and Drew.
I remember looking at Eskridge and told my BOI Law that he would not last in the NFL- Seattle has given him more than enough chances IMHO- They need to maybe keep him at the end of the roster for one last round ,But I would be looking for a new #3 and just move on .
These seeming poor mock drafts are Way better than the phony rumor-mill. Those that lead with headlines like: 'Seahawks trade for Derek Henry' - 'Lamar Jackson for Kyler Murray' - 'Bat Boy goes to Washington', or 'Alien Stole my Husband's Skin' (from Men In Black's 'Hot sheets' scene)...
The Zero shred of actual credible information anywhere in a story allows certain 'media' members to create headlines (click-bate) worthy of hording for the next Pandemic (TP substitute)...
What is worthy is reading these days? I have found that Seaside Joe offers a refreshing resource. Comments from readers quite often are good stuff. As for video options, My favorite is Mid-Atlantic Murph from 'Top Billin' on YouTube does a good job telling it like it is...He does stories on a few teams, including the Seahawks. Here is an interesting piece on Jamal Adams:
His piece on Hendon Hooker being a Geno Smith clone was great. He does use some language, but you can tell this dude has not only studied film, he has been in the huddles before. Great insights.
Liked for a link to a football source. I like any post that takes the time to make life easier for the rest of us to enjoy football.
And everyone, please take note, I "like" plenty of posts, but that doesn't mean I am endorsing every single comment made on the post. I say this because I like to keep my options open for running for POTUS, and I don't want my willy nilly liking to come back and bite me.
Anyone else think that the Steelers could have waited till the fourth round to draft Pickett? Seems like they were the only team who thought qb’s we’re going in the first round.
Haha, when I was thinking about the Hooker mock pick at 5 I was also thinking of how often Willis got mocked into the 1st and that none of the teams I saw him mocked to actually took him. And then I think about Mahomes going 10th in 2017, all the teams that *still* need a starting QB 6 years later that skipped over him (including the Niners, who can get f'ed). It's amazing.
2021, 5 QBs went in Rd 1. 2018, 5 QBs went in Rd 1. The League average for Rd 1 QBs has been trending upwards since about... er... well 1999 had 5 QBs go in Rd 1 just to throw things off, but pretty much the 21st century has been about drafting QBs early and often. To mock 5 QBs going Rd 1 in 2023, when everyone agrees there are way more than five teams with a pressing QB need, is actually a really smart and obvious take. More so in a year where basically everyone agrees there is a lack of Rd1 calibre talent overall. 2022 is the outlier year in so very many ways regarding the Draft and QBs.
Oh, and the last Tenessee QB who was in the Heiseman conversation and SEC Player of the Year? Peyton Manning!
NFL GMs have serious cases of FOMO and no patience to deal with it (and many franchises they can't afford to wait) so they panic and grab someone like a big game of musical chairs or shopping at Wal-Mart on Black Friday.
Geez! All this talk of drafting a quarterback is making my head spin. They have Geno and you have to wonder about the cap and who they are going to want to extend next year. To me Pete and John are doing a smoke screen. I am figuring they are looking at other players at these pro days. Photo ops don’t mean to much. Of course I could be wrong in which case Pete’s and John’s head could be spinning.
I have already suggested to Ken that he should sell extra likes for whatever the market will bear. I'd gladly spend a buck once in a while to draw attention to a post.

Mock drafts have proven over the years to be pretty much worthless. That's why I don't waste my time looking at them. Great article Joe! Go Hawks!

I watched Mel Kiper's response last night to Tannenbaum's draft and almost spit out my drink. Joe's article is the perfect response ... haha.

Burn! Burns!! Burned!!! Where's the aloe vera people! This is a burn ward!!!
Now you've lost it! I hate you! I HATE you Seaside Joe! How could you do this to us?!?!
This article roped me me in right from the start. Thanks for laughter that resulted! I still like HHooker, no matter where/when he lands. Go Seahawks!

Maybe the single worst thing that the internet has done to sports “journalism” is the “trades that make sense” articles. They are genuinely worthless.
Kinda like all the crazy sites out there on all subjects-
I had not seen Murph who I like, on Hooker, my Geno reference was on my own. I'm in good company

Keep the receipts!

My take is that Pittsburgh needed a QB didn’t rate any of the players still on the board as a 1st round talent.
Haha, when I was thinking about the Hooker mock pick at 5 I was also thinking of how often Willis got mocked into the 1st and that none of the teams I saw him mocked to actually took him.
