I know little about this coach, but I have come to trust JS and MM decision making.

I do hope that they are able to keep most of their offensive coaches.

Here’s what the Hawks had with KK:

Four-year college player at Colorado State University, where he played safety from 2005 to 2009 and served as a team captain as a senior.

Offensive quality control coach (NFL and college)

Graduate assistant / inside receivers coach (college)

Wide receivers coach (college)

Offensive assistant & quarterbacks coach (NFL)

Passing game coordinator

Offensive coordinator (NFL)

Here’s what they get with Fleury:

Played quarterback in college at Maryland and Towson.

Graduate Assistant & Intern at the University of Maryland (2003–2004) — early coaching start right after his playing days.

Secondary Coach and then Defensive Coordinator at Sacred Heart University (2005–2008) — worked on defense and oversaw the unit.

Special Teams Coordinator & Defensive Backs Coach at Towson University (2009–2012) — coaching at his alma mater across multiple position groups.

NFL coaching career began in 2013 in quality-control and other varied assistant roles.

Worked on both defensive and offensive staffs before focusing on offense.

Served as tight ends coach (2022–2024) and tight ends coach + run game coordinator (2025) with the 49ers.

So in college one played in the secondary and the other coached the secondary.

I was thinking back to last year, and how early Kubiak's name was reported as a candidate, yet it took awhile to circle back to him, and it was very late in January before the decision and announcement came. Mike was very diligent in his hire. It took weeks, and they talked to quite a few people after they initially talked to Kubiak.

Go back a year before that, and how long it took for them to make a decision on Grubb. It was weeks again. Now granted, we were late to the party and the candidates were pretty picked over by the time we were looking for an OC. But still, a lot of deliberation.

Fast forward to this year. They interview this guy on Saturday, and hire him on Sunday. How impressive does a guy have to be for the classic overthinker in Mike Macdonald to pretty much make a decision in less than 24 hours? He either impressed the shit out of Macdonald and JS, or they knew plenty about him long before the interview, and the interview was just to confirm what they thought they already knew. Either way, the speed they went from interview to hire says something. Almost like, quick, grab this guy before anyone else can clue in!

I only know what I've read about the guy, which isn't very much. Former QB in college, experience on both sides of the ball coaching, and according to Kittle, very, very detailed, and wanted his TE's to know what every player was doing on offense, not just the TE's. Macdonald demands that coaches are great teachers above all else, so I assume he's all that and a bag of chips.

I have total faith in Mike. If he was impressed enough to hire him that quickly, that's plenty good enough for me.

AKBear's avatar

Very detailed and wanting TEs know what every player was doing on offense sounds eerily familiar, doesn’t it? Sounds like what MM already demands for the D. Perhaps this level of detail already exists on the O but even if it does this means that Fleury’s transition should be seamless.

MM has earned my confidence. If he thinks Fleury is the guy, that’s good enough for me.

I guess this is why Janocko split, was upset he didn’t get the nod. Hopefully Peetz is not also incensed.

AKBear's avatar

Or maybe Janocko is not quite ready so working under a HC that calls plays is the better fit for now. It seems that the Hawks coaches all get along really well and are like a family so…

The thing about a TE coach is that they have to teach passing, running, AND OL concepts. It reminds me of how SSJ wrote an article about how ST coaches can be the best HCs because they have to be at least familiar with all phases of the game and how they mesh together. Throw in the fact that he was eun game coordinator for the Whiners, and he becomes a very familiar face for Sam who knows all-around ball. I believe he was a defensive coach at one point, too. So, maybe he gets how to attack schemes. I like the hire...

So far.

AKBear's avatar

Me too. I wouldn’t mind seeing more multiple TE sets. Seems like this could be in the offing with the hire.

I asked this question a couple of years ago when we drafted JSN, but I'm going to ask again:

How do we pronounce this guy's last name? My poor brain doesn't know how to put these letters together. Flo-ry? Fl-ury?

FranQc's avatar

In french the "eu" sound like "meh", so I'll say Flehry

I can imagine the interview. MM asks, “How would you beat my defense?” When the rival’s assistant coach is the only one with the right answer, you hire him away from your rival, immediately!

I’m worried that we might lose more assistants though.

Note that Fleury and Darnold were together just a couple of years ago. I expect that Darnold confirmed his character and that he believes in his skills as a strategist. Hopefully, he folds right into the 12 as one and MOB energy.

AKBear's avatar

The next SSJ Newsletter is an excellent read why it’s ok not to worry about losing more coaches especially OCs and losing such coaches and assistants means that one must be winning and doing something right so bring on the wins and the losing of coaches!

Jim McPherson's avatar

Interesting hire, keeping with the Kubiak/Shanahan coaching tree and philosophy. Is shifting QB coaching to Peetz along with passing game coordinator a viability?

Scott M's avatar

I can just see a Mathew McConaughey commercial... Macdonald pairs with Fleury...mcflurry. You don't think the nfl is trying to sell FOOD!

AKBear's avatar

Or a “winning” or a “we do not care” flavored M&M for MM!

Grant's avatar

ha ha ha... He's worth a shot at OC just for the cool name!

Ray's avatar

UGG!

In JS I trust.

Samuel Garfield's avatar

Huh. Would love some insight on why the team chose Fleury over other candidates and why it was so unexpected. This is literally my first time hearing his name! Incidentally, how often to OCs even come from coaching tight ends? My instinct tells me “very rarely”.

Either way, hope this goes better than Shane Waldron!

Chuck Turtleman's avatar

I thought it was pretty common for OC's to be promoted from tight end coaches. McVay for example, but I could be wrong on that.

Seaside Joe's avatar

Yeah Fleury was the last name to come up in the search. The Seahawks must know something they didn’t want anyone else to know and maybe that’s why we didn’t hear the name until the last couple of days.

Grant Alden's avatar

Seems like the Janocko hire was announced first? Maybe they had their choices limited? Or it was a phenomenal interview.

Seaside Joe's avatar

I can’t say with any certainty if the order of announcements by Schefter were indicative of the decision making process.

Grant Alden's avatar

Although one would think calling plays was preferable…so maybe not…or it’s money…

Grant Alden's avatar

What he said above me.

Seth L's avatar

Janocko would seemingly have more responsibility in seattle and obv a better roster... seems like Seattle could have had him if he was their first choice... but maybe he wanted to stay with Klint and MM was ok with it. Maybe he wanted a situation where nowhere to go but up. Maybe he wanted to work with Geno... ;) So many possibilities.

Samuel Garfield's avatar

More likely he wanted to work with the number 1 pick in the draft IMO

AKBear's avatar

And a promotion is a promotion and maybe he needs more tutelage so working with a play calling HC would get him both.

JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

Let's nail a chalkboard to the OC Office entry door, for when he gets hired by the Raiders next year. Worse yet, Az...

Maxx's avatar

So much for hiring and promoting from within thus continuing the culture growth. Are Peetz, Benton, and Outten next out the door instead of next men up?

AKBear's avatar

Culture is set by the HC so I think the team will be more than ok.

Lion777's avatar

The counter to that is, look at what happened to the Eagles with their internal OC hire. Internal does not necessarily mean better.

Seaside Joe's avatar

Crabtree says Benton is staying.

Maxx's avatar

That wouldn't be the same Crabtree who Richard Sherman used, abused, pulled his pants down, pushed him over, stole his lunch money, and publicly humiliated, is it??

Seaside Joe's avatar

Different Crabtree.

Seth L's avatar

None of those 3 can feasibly leave because they have to be offered a promotion... and only one guy can get that in Vegas.

JIMMY JOHNSON's avatar

Maybe the assistant guys like working here, recognizing the mercurial nature of the League right now as concerns HC's. Or they could just say NO when the offers roll in. Hell NO...

Rusty's avatar

I hope not.

Randall Murray's avatar

Came to post Andrew Janocko Raiders OC. Figured you got that. So yes, now need a QB coach as small hands Darnold needs to be coached up…Personally this sucks but they took KJ from us so pilfering some insight likely a good. But since he had audacity to work for the Whiners he is suspect to start with. :-)

Dale's avatar

Haha. I hope he’s not a double agent 🕵️‍♂️

zezinhom400's avatar

Pretty hard to double-agent JSN 😎

Ray's avatar

About as fruitless as double-covering JSN.
