Since nobody is claiming this one, I'll start. In 1982 I was 13 years old and could climb the ceiling ropes in our gym "like a squirrel" according to our football coach. Not one kid could come close. He would use me, (the little scrawny white kid) to show-up the older guys who thought they were tough and I hated it even though I still was kind of proud that I could beat them. Today at 55 years old, I wouldn't be able to go 3 feet up a free-hanging rope. I'll always wonder if I could have gotten into curling or something if I couldn't have been world class at it. The world is surely filled with people who would have been the best "fill in the sport" player ever if they had only been given the opportunity to try that sport.
I also was able to climb ropes easily as I was small and light in Jr high. I was at a track last week that had equipment there including a rope. I arrogantly thought it would be easy to climb. I started up it, realizing it was hard after a few hand over hands and stopped, worried that I wouldn't be able to get down, ha ha.
Looks like Payton is 23-22 when his starting QB is not named Drew Brees. In fairness, at least three of the losses came with the starters benched in the last game of a strong season. Still, I at least would not trade draft picks for this track record. New Orleans drafted Bryan Bresee with the first-round pick acquired, and used the second-rounder as part of a convoluted trade sequence that eventually netted Chris Olave and Trevor Penning.
Bronco's should be tough on our first outing. Nix doesn't have to earn Payton's respect, as Payton told the Press that Bo was their "perfect" choice for QB before the Draft even started. Payton is known as a hard taskmaster who demands his QBs have instant recall of all the plays in their playbook. (something Russ refused to do). I have zero doubt Bo Nix went to work the day after the Draft, memorizing everything the Coach gave him and doing so with a certain confidence that he will get it done. That's good coaching. It will also be a great test for our Defense. I also have zero doubt Coach Mack will have us prepared. Plus we have the embarrassment from our first game against the "Walk-over Rams" last year...
Sean Payton as a coach I’d count as a big ol’ loss. He’s an ass. If you want someone screaming at you when you screw up then I guess it could be a win?
Everybody is so much smarter than me. And maybe less drunk right now (on Mexico vacation), but i thought Bo Nix looked reeediculously good at Oregon this year. Again, not an nfl scout or anything. Just felt like a scary qb. Cheers to him figuring it all out game 2…
I’ve said all along that Nix is super talented and wanted the hawks to grab him if they could. As a Ducks fan, I hope he excels (but after playing the Hawks). Underestimate him at your peril.
I am a sucker for QBs, and every year think that a Zach Wilson (who Nix is younger than) or Trevor Lawrence will be the next big thing. And I may be wrong on Nix too. Full disclosure (and I said it 10+ times in these comments before the draft) I freaking loved the guy and am angry that Denver of all teams got him. For starters, I'm pretty sure he has the shortest name of any player in the NFL. 5 letters for both first AND last name. Some guy's last names will barely fit on a jersey! He wasn't even on my radar, as an NC boy who doesn't follow the PAC-10 until I started watch games. I am not an Oregon fan any more than I'm not a Huskies or Cougs fan.
KA: "Well, I do remember hearing long before the draft that the upside to Nix would be a comparison to Drew Brees, who of course was the perfect quarterback for Payton even if he wasn’t the most highly-heralded draft prospect."
Rather than Drew Brees, my highest upside comparison to Bo Nix, who I didn't even plan to watch, but wanted to watch C Jackson Powers-Johnson and wr Troy Franklin (who Denver also drafted); was and remains a right handed Steve Young. The way he moves in the pocket, the way he runs effectively while looking bad doing it, right down to his quick release when you didn't even think he was looking to pass the ball at all. I stupidly thought we might take him with our own 3rd round pick, but this wasn't the year to get a deal on quarterbacks.
Like Kenneth, I root for everybody to do well, outside of the rare case when I just feel like they aren't a good person. Even if they get drafted by a division rival -or a former one, who I still root against, like the Broncos. And even if they played for Auburn, who is on my top 5 least favorite CFB teams. I don't think he will be ready week one and I hope we have mastered Mike Mac's defense well enough to give him fits, but I do sincerely think that this is a kid who has potential to be really, really good before it's all said and done.
I loved the tone of this article. It is hard to describe but condescending comes to mind, as does snarky. Yet it didn't cross the line of disrespect. It was fun and light. I feel empowered to be fearless of whatever Denver throws at us. And, of course, offensively, we will crush them.
Hopefully the section titled "Seahawks can't celebrate until the game is over" with comments about how Denver's other position groups are even more important than who starts at QB will quell any inferrals that Seaside Joe implied the game would be easy.
I'm going to comment before I read just so I can be the first to post.
Lose to a Seattle based team three times in less than a year? How fun would that be for Seattle fans!!
OK, now I'm going to read the post
Nix vs Howell? How cool would that be!
Personally, I wouldn’t think it’s cool because that means Geno’s injured. But I get what you’re saying.

-1982 in the house!

I'm pretty certain that I'm also a naturally gifted curler, but we will never know.
It was a VERY GOOD YEAR 🤩
High school grad year!

Bo Nix has already won the NFL lottery twice:
1. Getting drafted in the first round and all the guaranteed $$ that comes with that
2. Getting Sean Patton as the head coach, who is adept at creating an offence that will make the most of his talent.
I really think he's likely to be a guy who gets 2nd and 3rd contracts, if not be *really* good at playing QB.
You just never know. Health is the biggest variable—and luck. Come to think of it those two things are connected by a certain Andrew.

Go Hawks!
Tread carefully on implying our first game will be easy. We all know how that went last year.
Last year's lazy start was my first inkling that Pete wasn't hitting on all cylinders.

1982 birthday 🎉🎂🎉
