Thank you, Steve! Yes, the comments are great. I've always said that the collective knowledge of readers is always going to be way, way, WAY more than I know. Most of my competitors ignore the comments (and mute or block anyone who gives even slight criticism on twitter) because sometimes they are negative and that's tough for many people to swallow. But I came up in the comments section of Seahawks and Mariners articles. I took a beating. I've been insulted so many times, it's impossible to keep count. Some of it is baseless! But then some of those criticisms or added points (sometimes it's not criticism, it's just "hey, I would also add this") are very helpful or right. Sometimes I'm flat out WRONG! And I need to hear that from my communities. Others ignore their communities. I'll never do that! I am nothing without the Seaside Joe readers, I learn something from you all every day.

One of the many good things about Seaside is that the commenters don’t savage each other and Joe is respectful even though there must be times when he is sorely tempted to be rude. (Confidential to SSJ: No need to respond to this!)

The other day on another blog, I dashed off a quick question on the way to returning to the rest of my life. The wording was undeniably ambiguous. But instead of asking me what I meant, I got pummeled over a point I wasn’t trying to make. Now, I’m thick-skinned when it comes to stuff like this and didn’t really care, but…where’s the win in this attitude? What could possibly be gained? How does it make the blog better? Anyway, I’m grateful to Seaside for providing this space.

Question I’ve been thinking about alot.

How would you resign the following players for 2023 (can drop guys that are signed through 2023 if you think there are better choices out there either through the draft or FA):

Geno

Penny

Jason Myers

Phil Haynes

Travis Homer

Poona

Cody Barton

Bellore

Michael Jackson

Ryan Neal

The above seem to be part of the teams core, albeit some just on special teams — but they feel like Seahawks if you know what I mean.

Can it be done? Are only 10 of the 20 needed for the 53-man roster — and then there’s the cash needed for draft picks and practice squad.

There’s talk about all the cap space the Hawks have for next year but it’s already feeling tight to me…hence would love to hear how you’d solve for these resigning.

love your list. gunna need more than our cap room for these. who do you propose will be cap casualties?

Kkkkk that’s the thing, have no idea how to make it work. Question for our sage Kenneth Arthur

Expand full comment
founding

One approach is to start off with the lifeboat exercise: Who do you throw out first to keep the boat afloat? Second? Third? Etc. That gives an admittedly unsubtle view of the priorities, so it’s not enough in itself. I’d say:

10. Bellore

9. Penny

8. Barton

7. Myers

6. Homer

5. Haynes

4. Ford

3. Neal

2. Jackson

1. Smith

At this point, it’s a given that they’ll keep Smith.

As for the rest, you have to look at other things. E.g., Jackson, Neal, and Ford will likely get offers from other teams. Are any of them worth the opportunity cost of overpaying in order to keep? Much of this comes down to the futures of Diggs and Adams—look for them to eat the dead cap hit on Diggs’s contract and renegotiate Adams. As for the players below them:

Homer: I doubt they’ll offer a second contract to a backup RB, but dang this guy is useful. And the blocking problems on the punt team disappeared when Travis came off the IR. This is one of those see-what-you-can-get-but-please-give-us-a-chance-to-match.

Haynes: Yes if they are satisfied that he is a bona fide starter. I’d put priority on an OL with continuity.

Myers: Tough because he has wound up meriting a contract that was criticized. The problem is that Jason is an 85% kicker when 85% is the league average (80% when the Hawks signed him). So how can you justify top dollar? On the other hand, how can you justify taking a chance on a kicker when your team is young and on the rise?

Barton, Penny, Bellore: League minimum or team terms.

A long way of saying that—aside from Geno—Haynes, one of Neal and Jackson, and possibly Homer and Myers are the most likely to be resigned in a competitive market. But realistically, they are going to lose players they’d like to keep. The salary cap forces that on good teams.

What are the odds we resign Geno? By that I mean, do you feel he will want more than the Hawks want to pay? I'm kind of feeling like the organization is of the mind the position is overvalued, in spite of recognizing it's the most important.

Did you hear the Pete Carroll Show on 710 this week? Pete suggested that "there was resistance" to wearing the wristband that helps Geno get plays in so quickly in past seasons. The week before when asked what made Geno different he said he was "one of the guys." He *almost* chucks Russ under the bus in his post-game answers every week. Makes me realize there was a lot more tension in that building than I ever thought.

Pete has mastered the art of criticizing Russ by praising Geno, the coaches, and others. It's not too subtle and it only works because of Wilson's struggles and our success, but it's delightful to watch.

Expand full comment

Sadly, it IS delightful, and I'm enjoying it a little bit too much...lol.

I'm not sure how much Peteis rubbing it in though. Pete knows there'll be a post career day for he and Russell (Russell probably before Pete at this rate), and he wants reunions you be positive pin what they accomplished.

I'm sure pet Pete's a father-figure to Russ and care a lot about him.

Agreed! His unsubtle comments make me smile every time!

Chuck, I think Schneider is working on it right now. I think even in contracts this team competes. They're trying to get their best deal while also encouraging the player to get theirs.

It might sound weird, but I believe it's howit works. And I also think if a player goes and gets more and is successful, that Pete is happy for them and proud of them.

I don't have great examples for this, but one that might come to mind is DJ Reid. DJ was basically a practice squad guy that Seattle stole away from SF.

They have mom tools and opportunity to succeed, which he did.

They probably offered him a contract that he not only could make more, but reunite with his D coordinator from SF.

So he took it.

But we've seen guys like Bruce do that and come back.

Because in the compete aspect of this, Carroll knows the Seahawks experience is a good one. It's Pete competing against the other teams to make it desirable to stay.

There wasn't a lot said about Penny staying, but that's not what he said. He signed with Seattle because he liked the program.

A little rambling here, but I think even now they're letting Geno what value they place on the position, and that they've let him have a chance to play into an incredible contract.

They also have in their negotiating pocket the system that has allowed him to succeed. They also have Drew Lock as a bargaining chip.

Look, I might be off, but I think that's how they operate. If I added anything to this site this last off season it's how they do business. I saw some of this success.

Kenneth adds great pieces that help keep me informed, and kind of understand the direction they'll take so I really like this site.

Question: You pondered whether the Seahawks would pick up Brooks' fifth year. Why are you so down on Brooks? If they keep him (and they will) what would you do to mask his weakness as a coverage linebacker?

Background:

Both Pete and Dave Wyman have been effusive in their praise of Jordyn Brooks with both saying he isn't elite yet, but will be. PFF has the elite few (appx six players) then comes a group emerging players capable of becoming elite. Brooks is in that group along with Roquan Smith. Brooks has a better PFF grade than Isiah Simmons or Zaven Collins and Brooks has indeed improved each year based on PFF grades. Simmons and Collins have a better coverage grade but are weak against the run. Barton wasn't on the list.

Please define "down" because I want to make sure we're on the same page about what being "Down" on a player means.

The fact that you wonder if they will pick up his 5th year option is telling. You've previously lamented his poor coverage and lack of big plays.

Before I answer, just know that it is rare for players drafted outside of the top-20 to get the fifth-year option. So in my estimation, I'm "normal" on Jordyn Brooks, not "down".

Brooks' suitability to be a pillar of the Seahawks defense. Just like quarterback survivor, we're looking at Brooks' through blue and green colored glasses. Is he a foundational Seahawk in your opinion? Why or why not?

Is one cornerback position more difficult than the other? Richard Sherman played LCB, so I always assumed it was where you wanted your best guy. It makes some sense as most QBs are right-handed and perhaps prefer to see and throw that direction (to the defensive left). However we've got Woolen at RCB and looking around the league a lot of teams (but not all) have their best CB on the right. How do we decide where to put our CBs?

I would say the nickel is the most difficult defensive back position. Not only that, it gets the least amount of credit and love.; that is a from Quandre Diggs who played there for the lions .As a nickel you don't have the sideline to help you and you may cover anybody from a jitter bug to a huge bruising tightend. As far as outside corners it depends how dominate one side of your body is. Personally I learned in rugby how to kick with both feet which saved my ass. Some people can't adapt and don't travel

Interesting. So perhaps has more to do with where a player feels most natural than a schematic decision? Nickel does seem like a tough job due to the variety of assignments it comes with. Go Coby!

Nickel is very tough. When I hear people talking about Coby's yardage or completion percentage I feel they have missed the point. Firstly his numbers aren't that bad, then you add in four punch outs and good tackling those numbers mean even less. Coby is playing a position that he didn't play growing up, and is learning in the NFL. Personally I am very impressed with him, Woolen and Jackson, not forgetting Tre Brown might be fit enough to play this weekend

Plus, he started camp at LCB. He’s learning to play nickel on the job.

Kenneth I would like to withdraw my question. Apparently Brady gets rid of the ball faster than any QB, in under 2.5 seconds. As touchdown Leonard nor the Bucs are running well, I think rushing 4 on first and second down and 5 on third might be the general idea. If you feel different let me know

General football question: How do defenses know what players to rotate in and out. Is it always down/distance based or do they try to follow the offense?

It's actually a mixture of all of those and how much the rushers have in the tank. When your carrying 280lbs plus there are only so many snaps in a row you can play. I have been watching AL Wood and it seems that if we hold the other team to 2 yards or less on first down Woods will come out. That is to keep him fresh plus the other team is likely to pass. The more nuisance decisions come in when to bring the third safety on the field, and do we play nickel or dime. Also something we don't do a lot of , when to blitz. If Jamal Adams was playing there would be more blitzing. The perfect world is where the Hawks are, able to get home with only 4 or 5 rushers which is happening over the last 4 or 5 games

I saw that on ESPN, too, but thought they were pretty fair towards the Seahawks. Had K9 at #4, Woolen at #5, said Cross just missed the top 10, then spotlighted Lucas as a "rising" rookie. I mean, they provided blurbs on 14 rookies and we had four of them!

Rich, I either gave you or a different (lucky) rich a 30-day comp to regular joes. Thanks for commenting!

Everyone's gonna have a different take on that question, probably including Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos and Pete Carroll. I believe that compared to what we've seen so far this season, better days are ahead for Wilson. However, compared to what we saw during his prime, probably never going to get there again.

I believe that Pete has the right idea of how to use Russell. But that requires a certain kind of roster that the front office failed to provide. Trust eroded over time and what happened, happened.

Maybe I’m nuts but at this point I’d almost prefer Seattle at 7-10 and no worse than the 12th pick in addition to Denver’s almost certain Top 5. Agree with your post earlier on what those picks could be worth in either more picks or quality trades (although the Jamal Adams trade has me wary). Would be awesome to see Seattle make the wild card round and maybe even win a playoff game. But, isn’t it better to build ammunition at this point?

Honestly, 7-10 was my best case scenario when the season started and it was likely Seattle would end up in the top 5. Now, possibly 2 in the top 10? Tempting
