As a music educator, and a "talented" musician myself who deals with "talented" people all day, I have sort of strong opinions about this word... I just do not like the way people use it. To me, being super good at something doesn't mean that you are talented. Talent, in the strict sense, is a person's innate aptitude for something.

I had a squirelly little student a few years back who came into high school as a little, uncoordinated kid, but he played football. He loved it, and he was terrible at it. Not talented. But he absolutely worked his ass off in high school, way outworking the more "talented" kids. When he graduated from our school he was by far the most outstanding football player in our program, holding multiple school records to this day. The same thing happens with music. Often times, the most talented kids like to believe that they are somehow special, or gifted by the gods, which means that they don't have to work hard. They were just born awesomer than all those other players/singers or whatever. They coast on "talent." They like feeling special, like they are innately better than other people.

I know I did that in HS. I worked just hard enough to stay a step ahead of the 2nd best musician in our school (who worked super hard), which wasn't very hard for me because I was way more talented. Then I got to a big university music program and the first week it struck me, "WTF have I been doing wasting my time these last 4 years?" The thing that really burns me is that if I had worked as hard as that 2nd best person, there is no telling what my ceiling would have been, because of my talent. So does talent matter? Only if you do something with it.

What ultimately matters is never who has the most talent, but rather who knows how to work their ass off, because those guys are going to go far. Talent grows on trees. If I run a metal business and I have to pick between a welder who is naturally gifted and one who works super hard, I know who I am picking every time.

So bummed not making tonight’s game. I almost never miss home games.

Lockett is a top 3 #2 WR. Maybe he's the best, period.

Expand full comment

I think Lockett is amazing. Pros pro and a great career. Has it seemed like he’s lost a step tho this year? Not sure. Also, brutal drop in Dallas.

Other candidates that come to mind:

Brandon Auiyuk

Jaylen Waddle

Davonte Smith

Tee Higgins

Puka Nacua

Overall, I think Lockett is a very good #2 a strength for the offense

I like "Any Given Sunday" because it is so outrageous and brutal. Everything about it is over-the-top and exaggerated to the point where it loses credibility, but it's funny and gross and exciting. It has a great cast and Pacino's speech is epic. I think it's one of those films you either love or hate, and your reasons for doing so are the same either way.

Answering the question with another question: how much is talent related to coaching? Continue to think Waldron and Hurtt impact our perception of wasted talent.

Gotta go with Jerry McGuire but I confess to have watched The Longest Yard with Burt Reynolds and then again the Adam Sandler remake and enjoyed them both.

Big YES to The Longest Yard. A Burt Reynolds gem!

North Dallas Forty is excellent as entertainment with some truthful shots about the damn Cowboys. I love Nick Nolte, and the late Mac Davis was superb. Charles Durning and Dabney Coleman were great as always, and Matuszak was a very good athlete-turned-actor.

I have no idea what the Hawks-Eagles outcome will be. I'll just be spittin' blood like I always do during Hawks games.

Varsity Blues - Legit funny and a perfect satire of sports movies if you're not paying attention you might think it just is a football movie. Also it has... that scene... you know the one... Plus Paul Walker demonstrating he could actually act at one point in time.

Friday Night Lights, the TV Show - Film is good, TV show is an all-timer. Enjoyable for some smart football content, enjoyable for some excellent small town drama. And enjoyable to spot famous faces getting early brakes, alongside the very best of TV couples.

I mean, Draft Day is bad, but in a good way. It's dumb, stupid and crucially never taking itself seriously. Like, how can you call a film with that pancake payoff bad?! Also it has Superman! And Chadwick Boseman in like four scenes and he steals the entire movie.

Oh, and just for general sports to shout out two more. Firstly, Cheer - the Netflix series. One of the best sports series i've ever seen, so very very very good. Secondly, Dodgeball - possible the greatest sports movie of all time. I can't describe how much this movie creeps into my daily speech, plus that Armstrong cameo is just hilarious nowadays.

I truly hope our offensive line has good day. They have had very little chance all season to build any true feel and communication amongst themselves. That is Really needed on the O-line. Couple of games now together maybe they will mesh better on Monday night! That is Really needed on the O-line. Hopefully Tre is healthy and they play Tre at the CB and DW in the nickel, that seems to work the best and take advantage of all the tools and skills DW seems to be developing, making things happen ,by reading the O. I think this guy has that skill!

Very good point. Elite play requires the guys get enough real-world gell time in games. O-line work is THE most demanding dance that teams wrestle with. The more I watch and study, the more admiration I have for the athletics involved. No more Try. It is Do Time. Drew will do well to take them all out for steak and lobster.

Patricia doesn't play CB and with Slay out that is going to be a problem for the Eagles regardless of who is coacing the D. Hurts? I have seen too many players come back from "illness" and play really well to think that is any kind of an advantage at this point.

For the Seahawks, this is as "must win" as it gets. Win, and they could possibly win out and set themselves up for the postseason; lose, and they will be playing out the string.

Tonight, they can begin spoiling their way to a Super Bowl. I do believe poor interpretations of ridiculous NFL rule changes has cost us two games. I am pleased to see the League is calling less DPI since our Dallas debacle. My hope is the Lead Officals are communicating concerns to the Coach and he to the team. The less interruptions they impose, the better football is played, especially on defense. It causes them to play hesitant and tentatively, leading to questioning abilities. Sadly, flopping or pretending injury is becoming common in the games.

Riq can become TARIQ! again if they stop calling ticky-tacky DPIs.

Excellent question comment by Ian Lamberton.

For some reason, people who comment on the Seahawks get away and are never questioned when they say “this team has talent” or “Geno has so much talent around him”

Who are people talking about? Why do people just assume that to be true?

I see guys that have potential but I would not say they are playing as top 10 or 15 type talents. Arguably our best offensive player, DK Metcalf, might not even be a top 20 #1 wide receiver.

As funny as it sounds, and this community I’m sure will not like it or agree, but Geno may actually be the best player at his position relative to the NFL (top 15 QB) on the offense.

This is where this team is at, imo. Players need to play up to potential (DK, Lucas, Cross, Lewis, Fant etc.).

I think that is why Pete is so frustrated- the team is not playing to potential

I made the same argument that Metcalf isn't even a top 25 WR recently. Then I went back and looked and it's probably 20 instead of 25, but still makes the point.

Clearly better (12): Tyreek, Chase, Jefferson, Davante, AJ Brown, Lamb, Diggs, Kupp, Deebo, Keenan Allen, Mike Evans, A St Brown

Can argue for (12): Aiyuk, Olave, G Wilson, Devonta Smith, Waddle, Lockett, McLaurin, Godwin, Higgins, DJ Moore, Pittman, A Cooper

Too soon to tell but arguable (4): Nacua, Nico Collins, Addison, Flowers

Completely agree. And I like DK, but let's just be realistic about it.

Comparatively, he takes up a large amount of cap space for WR (6th most?) and is probably around 20.

Geno takes up less cap space for a QB (18th?) and is probably around top 15 QB.

So why do the fans seemingly want to get rid of Geno and give DK a pass?

Preferably, I just want DK to be better and I think he can be but there is a ton of really good WR now in the NFL.

Geno may be that. But at the same time, Jake Browning could be better? It’s been an interesting year for QBs to say the least.

Jake Browning has been awesome. Another example of how hard it is to accurately rate QBs. It should also provide some hope for Lock.

My point in pointing out Geno isn’t to say whether he is good or bad it’s more of an example to - why does he get all the criticism while the rest of the offense people claim to be “talented”.

I get he is the QB and that’s part of it. But, I think discourse shouldnt just focus on the QB but the whole team.

Question: disregarding the QB, who is top 15 at their respective position on offense?

Expand full comment

My measure is the 2 touchdowns Drew tossed after a long draught and doing so on little pratcise with the players he is throwing to. I think he earned another look tonight. I strongly suspect Pete told him so last week.

I am excited for Lock. I think he has a chance to be good.

My hope is that with the added practice time we get aggressive playcalling. It seemed to me that last week was a little watered down due to lack of practice.

Let Lock loose! Let’s go win a game!

Well, for me, you know I have a very clear and consistent record of saying there are no top-10 players on offense or defense, with the exception of a few borderline cases. I don’t think I’ve been any harder on Geno than I’ve been critical of the tight ends or DK or Waldron. Maybe because he’s the QB, he’s the name that stands out the most or gets mentioned more often. I’ve made many compliments of Geno and written that I’m just an observer doing my best and am always open to having my opinion changed.

My comments aren’t specific to Seaside Joe but rather in general.

In general I hear a lot of Geno heat while at the same time people say “we are so talented”

That’s just not what I see when I watch the Seahawks. I don’t see the QB holding back the team.

And I also think that’s a dangerous path to go down. Because it is assuming that a new QB will solve the problems. By pointing out Geno definitely not terrible and is probably around top 15 at his position should lead the discourse to where I think it should be: why are the other players not better?

Who can get to blue chip level? How can we get them there? How can we acquire top level talent?

Tyler Lockett is still playing at least top 20- That's O- On D who ? Maybe J Reed , he has been playing very well, pretty much all year so far. DK could/should be harder to cover! JSN has a future-
