6 reasons that the Seahawks could be better than the national expectations
'I'm not a believer in the Seattle Seahawks', 7/31/2023
Every day for the past week I have gone to Google News and searched “(team) training camp” for all 32 teams, so I consider myself as informed as most outsiders can be in that regard, but I also know that I’m not nearly as knowledgable on those other teams as the people who follow them day-in and day-out throughout the year.
I can read reports that “Tyreek Hill looks more human this year than past years” (which I did read) and “Brock Purdy’s accuracy is not good so far” (also true) but can I say with any confidence that I KNOW those teams like I know the one that I write about every single day for Seaside Joe?
I can’t.
So when I hear an ‘outsider’s’ opinion on the Seattle Seahawks, I think there is an opportunity there to gain good perspective on what others think of the team. Yeah, we can answer back with a tone like “Oh you’re so stupid, you don’t know what you’re talking about, you’re missing the point!” But what points might we be missing because we’re too heavily invested in the cause and too closely examining each bit and part of the engine? Maybe they’re overlooking the micro view and we’re overlooking the macro.
However, I do want to acknowledge the side of, “What are people missing if they don’t follow this team every single day,” as we do here.
It occurred to me that the point of view of Seaside Joe’s audience is, “What if you’re so obsessed with the Seahawks that you need daily updates?” If that’s you and you haven’t already: Add your email and subscribe today!
I don’t know who Amal Shah is other than to say that this morning I watched a video of him talking about the Seahawks for VSIN, which I guess is a gambling channel on YouTube, and from that limited experience he comes off to me as a fairly reasonable person. He doesn’t think that the Seahawks are going to be a very good team and I’m not bothered by that; I feel like Seattle is probably a little bit better than the national narrative—and we’re still more than 40 days away from the Seahawks first game—but I’m rarely the type to get emotionally wrapped up in some debate because somebody else thinks that they’re a little bit worse.
Last year, the Seahawks were much better than I expected. Maybe this year, they will be worse. If I knew the answer to that question, watching football wouldn’t be as fun!
“I’m not a believer in the Seattle Seahawks, so I’m probably a biased opinion coming in here on the Hawks, but this is a team that went 9-8 last year. They get into the postseason but remember, this is a team that beat the Rams and Cardinals four times in those matchups, so 44% of those wins came against two teams that were completely in disarray. So like I said, I don’t understand the affinity for this team. I think their receiving corps is going to be one of the top receiving corps in the NFL, when you look at it. DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and then of course the rookie Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the slot. Their defense is going to be improved, but in terms of winning this division, I just don’t see it.”

6 reasons to think that the Seahawks might be better than Amal Shah and others like him who are skeptical about Seattle’s chances of winning the NFC West think that they are right now. Because it’s easy to be skeptical based on how the Seahawks played last season, especially in the second half and in the fourth quarter of their playoff loss. It’s easy to doubt them based on Geno Smith and the offense sputtering down the stretch against good defenses. It’s easy to base a ‘bet the under’ on Seattle because of their run defense in 2022.
What’s being overlooked that’s maybe not as easy to see if you’re not watching the team literally every single day? I’ve got 6 Answers to that Question.
