This was always going to happen, and there are more to come. A big hug to Nino and Uncle Will. Love those two guys and everything they've done for the team. There is more work to be done, and John is just getting warmed up. In all the mock draft simulations I run I've always tried to pick up at least one quality safety, one iLB, and one TE. It's not easy, depending on how the draft falls. There is some depth at TE and safety, but I'm not sure about the LB group. There are some athletes, but not a lot of real thumpers.
It wouldn't surprise me if Seattle signs at least one LB in FA, but I expect he'll be shopping in the bargain bin.
I should add, I agree that Nick Bellore and Mone will be next, although Mone may take a bit to work out as he'll need an injury settlement if that knee is not all the way back. We won't save the full value of his 2024 salary if that's the case, but hopefully most of it.
Looking at some of the articles online about the cuts, there are people saying stupid things…like how shocked they are. How there are no players at certain positions now (e.g. TE).
Guess what? They’re not playing for 6 months! We have the draft and free agency still to come.
Reading those articles just makes me appreciate SSJ even more.
Really intrigued by the timing here insofar as the decisions were all announced simultaneously on the Monday after the Combine. Indicates to me that the team feel bullish about what's available at those positions in the draft, and that they just weren't going to get a trade.
The "post June 1" thing I find to always be misleading. You are eating the dead money either way, it's just a question of when you do it. It's either really bad now or half bad now and half bad next year.
Yes it’s one of several tools to kick the can forward another year and create cap space.
Works better bc of the continuously rising cap — essentially what you kick fwd is a lower % of your future cap. If the cap stops rising, then yeah it’s more of a gamble
Had Dissly noted in the comments and updated in the article, but that's on me that I sent the email about 2 seconds too soon haha.
Adams is a normal release, not post June 1. No real need to make Lockett a post-June 1 release, as Seahawks have enough cap space to eat it all right now and not push it into 2025. The money saved wouldn't even be there until the summer, no need to create the additional $10 million cap savings that I can think of.
Yes figured it was just a bit too quick on the Send button.
The reason I was hypothesizing about even more cap space is if they indeed let go Williams in favor of making a run at Chris Jones who’s not going to be tagged. And I’d like to see them re-sign Brooks and Fant and/or Parkinson. And at least one good safety, perhaps Geno Stone since he doesn’t have to learn the defense.
And honestly, you can never have enough good edge players and Brooks was a high pick they had a 1st rd grade on, that hasn’t played as such — for example Mafe had a stronger rookie season. Several out there that might make sense to grab, and unhook Darrell Taylor and throw him back into the water. (swear to God if he overruns one more run to his side or sets one
more soft edge I’m going to throw something too hard at my TV)
The Pete Caroll era really is over, as JS demonstrates he has no "my guys" to protect anymore. God i'm excited to see the Bellore cut news coming soon.
There is a bit of me that'll mis Diggs. He had some good times, but that injury, he was never the same. Adams less of a miss, we swung on a potentially special player and injuries really derailed that one. Somewhere there is an alternate universe where Jamal never got hurt, and went on to post four-straight seasons of 8+ sacks and totalled 8 INTs, leaving fans comparing him to Sherman and Thomas and Kam as a future-HOF DB. (That universe being my copy of Madden 21)
I can't say any of the three are a surprise (I'd have been shocked if any stayed), but it's nice to have it official. Following this team has been a roller coaster since March 8th of 2022. I suspect it will stay that way for the foreseeable future with a new staff and roster churn to fit their wishes.
Oh my God! What are we gonna do without Jamal Adams?! I was going to make some jokes about his 5 plays per game but he actually played 518 snaps last season which is way more damning considering how little impact he had...
Super sad about Diggs but I understand the math didn't math. The only defensive player in the league that played more defensive snaps than him was Wagner (mostly because we couldn't get or keep our defense off the field) and odds are he's out too.
Nothing unexpected- just hoping they find a way to keep Tyler Lockett! Excited for what is to come!

then you have ridiculousness like this: https://www.fieldgulls.com/2024/3/5/24091582/seattle-seahawks-suddenly-have-leadership-void-quandre-diggs-jamal-adams-nfl-free-agents. Really?A Leadership Void? This kind of garbage article is why Seaside Joe is quite possibly the greatest sports blog ever, of any sport.
Nothing unexpected... to SSJ readers.

Isn’t today Tuesday?
Well THAT'S embarrassing
It finally now feels like the offseason is beginning. I know getting a new coach was big but no coach throws, runs or tackles.
I've been hoping the Hawks go the the aggressive route with cuts and how it impacts the cap. Time for some new blood.
Rotoworld says cutting Adams was a "surprising move". I guess it was surprising only if you haven't been paying attention.
Let the house cleaning begin.
$30M in dead money just between Diggs and Adams. Ouch.
Diggs was an interesting one. Lockett the other interesting one. We will see.
Then brooks and Williams will be interesting.
Joes compelling article the other day coming to fruition!
Sorry just one more comment, about Lockett. If he’s cut, seems like would have to be with a post-June 1 designation.
Now, he’d have $19m dead money and $7m cap savings.
Post June 1 he’d have $10m dead money and $17m cap savings.
Adams had a similar structure and you can have two post June 1 designations, so that one’s not making sense yet.
The "post June 1" thing I find to always be misleading. You are eating the dead money either way, it's just a question of when you do it. It's either really bad now or half bad now and half bad next year.

Ken, is there any chance they resign Diggs at a lower number since the dead money is moot, or are they allowed to do that kind of thing?

And they cut Dissly as well, so you’ve got three now.

Spotrac is claiming Jamal is a post June 1 cut. I'm not sure where they are hearing that info. Has that been reported yet?
Brady Henderson reports it is not a post-June 1 cut for anyone.
Thanks!
Interesting, I also don't see a source or anyone else reporting that. I would never ever make an assumption like that.

Let the overhaul commence
I am glad that big change is the order of the day. And we subscribers were ready for it due to your cogent analyses.
For those of you getting the e-mail, the news of Will Dissly's release came right after I hit send. So it has since been upated with Dissly's release.
