As much as that can feel encouraging, I tend to lean more towards that signaling a rough year with the cornerbacks. Two day three picks starting in the secondary just isn't done unless the situation turned out to be less than ideal for the team. Not that the veteran competition is inspiring.
Isaiah Likely will be missed by your man and maybe ours Jason McCall. The Ravens took the. tightend, McCall's number1 target last year, and he looks great. You would think we could study the Ravens and copy what they do with their tightends. Playing in 12 personel a lot this year and our two star wideouts should get, Dizz, Parkinson, and Fant room to move. Quite frankly no matter our record its an area we need great improvement.
I wonder what Carroll is up to, alternating Lock and Smith's time with the 1st team, instead of picking up where things left off? Doesn't seem to make sense given that we know what Smith is able to do as well as his limitations. Would seem to make more sense to give all the time with the first team between now and the Dallas game to Lock.
I get not wanting to hand the position to Lock without making him work for it but half the stuff out of Carroll's mouth seems insincere. I'm not a "fire Pete" guy. Yes, he makes mistakes and can be frustrating at times but he's proven himself. If I could trade Pete for McVay, I would. Or Shanahan or LaFleur. But guys like that are hard to find.
I know the college game is a different animal but I much prefer to listen to Kalen DeBoer press conferences because one gets a strong sense of sincerity. Whereas Jimmy Lake always struck me as a fool or a huckster (or both). He wouldn't answer questions and, when he did, it never felt like he was on the level.
Carroll seems a lot more honest than Lake but, at the same time, one doesn't get the sense that he's consistently speaking his truth. He seems to use his comments as a way to send messages. When he said he was going to get rid of players who don't tackle, I thought it a message, primarily for Blair. Back in 2012, he seemed to be using psychology to bring Wilson along and keep him from being too confident.
Is that what the best coaches do? Though we've not yet seen the finished product with DeBoer at Washington, I had a really good sense about him from the very first press conference. I get the sense that he's smart, competent and really cares about his players. He has a group of super loyal and competent assistants. He seems to make consistently smart choices. His QB competition seems legit even though Penix seems most likely to win based on experience and familiarity with the playbook.
I had two great rugby coaches over 23 years and they were the antithesis of each other. One coach was an English gentleman who never yelled but I could play in front of big crowds and when I messed up I would hear,"Oh Chris". I felt so badly and would always try to make up for it.
The other coach was a Welshman , who was an us against the world guy. I was vice captain and he had a chat with me first day. He said " if I don't piss you off sometime this year I won't be doing my job" Well he did, and sat me for a game, over a let's say a minor indiscretion after a game, envolving the team bus and some type of smoking. I played great for the rest of the season.
The point is I would have almost died for either one, both brilliant in their own way. I think Pete sends messages for sure and I listen for what little I can parse out of a press confrence. I believe most of his players feel the same about Pete as I did with my two favorites.
I haven't thought too much about it, but I sense that this is the same Pete we've seen for 13 years. The only difference being we haven't had low expectations or a QB competition in over 10 years, so is it *us* who have changed more than Pete? Just a thought.
Just saw the write of the practice today (Monday) where Geno got all the 1st team snaps. Isn't today the last "public" practice?
It would not be surprising if today turned out to be Pete punking the media with the next period of time getting Lock ready to go. The 'surprise' starter three weeks from tonight...
"Finally, Pete Carroll said that Seaside Joe is the best Seahawks newsletter he’s ever read. Whether that was something that I read between the lines or if it was a direct quote is unclear and frankly, unfair." best chuckle i had today, keep on keepin'on, KenJoe.
Coby may end up as starting nickel, so we may start both our rookie CBs after all.

Grayson McCall will make it work with his new weapons, but yes, Likely was a stud whenever the ball came near him at CCU.
