I agree with your take. I'd like to see his salary reduced and Tyler 'on the team' next year for his retirement. If not, Adonai Mitchell at 20. ;)

The fact that the draft is so deep at WR creates a supply/demand leverage for the team against Lockett.

If I had to guess, I would think JS will be offering him about 5mil with a $10 bonus across a 3yr contract that gets him a 2mil paycut and the team 9mil in cap space, with incentives over the next 2yrs to keep that amount annually based on production. But, I could be way off-base on the numbers. I just know that Lockett doesn't have much leverage because the team can save a lot of money and go get a rookie instead.

I hope Lockett stays on a reworked 2 year contract extension. His numbers being down is more a reflection of Waldron's play calling and Geno's slow eyes than Lockett's play. He is still a valuable 3rd down reciever and a great teamate. A new Inovatiive OC will help him and the whole offense.

If the player they want is gone at 16 they should trade down to a late 1st round pick and a high 2nd and mid 3rd rounder.

Should be an interesting off season.

I hope Lockett takes a small paycut and that satisfies the front office. I think the issue of Lockett's value is overstated, and his skills undervalued. He isn't worth 17 million, but he is worth 12 million.

I think you are wildly overvaluing Tyler. He's catching 2/3 of the balls thrown to him. Sure, some of that is on Geno. Second though, more often than not he slides down if there's a defensive player within five yards of him, so barely, if any, yac. You want the Seahawks to pay that guy $12 million + a year? Please. That was a bad contract and they should cut him.

Tyler has 1 down year in catch rate... and makes some business decisions at age 32. He isn't a big man and I'd rather have him available for the season than try for 2 YAC and get exploded.

I think there was a tough call between two popular players: Diggs and Lockett / for who to cut. Ultimately, Diggs added more room to the cap.

However, I took JS’ comment as saying: we don’t know who will be on the FA market and if we see guys we want we will go get them (and cut Lockett or bellore etc.)

Imo, Lockett should be cut (or restructured, pay cut). I would have no problem with giving him a shot to go play in KC if he wants. Or coming back to the Hawks for less money.

The draft is incredibly deep at WR. This also isn’t anything new, as WR drafts have been loaded for sometime now. I see a supply demand isssue in WRs - so many good ones now.

Schneider also brought up that players often times think they are worth more than they actually are.

In his response to Bob’s question on being attached to players, it could be implied he is bringing this scenario up to make a point using past experiences to address present players.

Tyler will do what's best for our Team. I see a genuine friendship between he and DK and will want to see DK finish the polishing still needed in making him a Great Player. No doubt every new guy turns to Tyler to find themselves a place to live when they move here. It's an essential ingredient in Team cohesion. The one great thing he brings to the field is his reliability to get open when the SHTF. Whoever is QB will need that unique talent on the field. The OC will design the passing plays around this. Signing Lockett will come down to the wire, but JS will do whatever is needed to sign him.

The Seahawks will likely pay Lockett a bit more than he could get on the open market but he looses the chance to play for a team with a chance of winning it all in 2024. Also playing somewhere else doesn’t mean he has to uproot his business. People who have made upwards of 60 million dollars can afford two homes.

I know Joe Montana took his MBA and started a quiet investment program for players. Seeing teammates on the street was inexcusable to guys like Joe, so he did something about it. I suspect Pete is a Board Member. Securing a future for the guys is as noble as it gets, but they won't stop there. I have no doubt the focus is not just on millions, but $$billion$. All for one, One for all. That's Football.

Roger Staubach, parlayed his football success and Naval Academy general engineering degree into a successful commercial real estate business that recently sold for more than $600 million dollars. I seriously doubt that Tyler Lockett real estate interest is limited to just selling homes as a broker.

Cool. I love the selfless designs that Montana went after. The NFL was sued after Pittsburg continued to send a concussed lineman in time after time. We all cheered him as simply being "tough". He ended up mindlessly homeless in his truck and it led to the on-field protocols we now see in every game. It is a beautiful example of people policing their own ranks and not waiting for "someone" to do "something".

If Tyler has an 'S-Corporation', he can branch it out into other fields as 'sub-corps', not just real estate. But then, this may be dated Washington State info from 20 years ago.

This is the result of continually restructuring and rolling back contracts…. It all being pushed to 2024 makes the case for cutting one our go to guys… Who doesn’t like Lockett?? Be fair but not crazy!!

I truly hope they can get a renegotiated deal done with Tyler! He has lot left to offer and they should keep him, BUT with a new deal!

“Realtors in Washington State make an average of 5% commission, so Lockett would need to sell roughly 20 $1 million houses per week to make as much money as he will be paid by the Seattle Seahawks if he’s not released.”

Isn’t the commission split between the buyer’s and seller’s agents? Which means that Tyler would have to sell 40 million-dollar homes a week…

Rob runyan's avatar

Thats correct Paul! Im a Realtor, the total commission averages 5%, typically split 50/50 between the listing broker and the buying broker

So you know that there are tons of houses worth north of 5 million in Seattle. Just look for a house in the montlake district.

tons? Try the average price of a house in Bellevue is over 1.2 M! Thats crazy! But Tyler is selling multi million dollar homes, so he will be fine!

Bob Johnston's avatar

For most realtors it's even less than that because the broker takes part of the commission as well. In this case Tyler is also the broker (I believe) so that's moot.

At this point no one really left for a post-June 1 designation either so I imagine he’ll get that designation if they do pull the trigger on him

But as you say, makes absolutely no sense for him to test the market, won’t get anything close to $17m

However: If you are right, that the Bears would try to grab Geno as their “Alex Smith” for Conor Williams, then grabbing Lockett as well (who has also played for Waldron) as a security blanket could be worth more than Seattle would pay him.

God that would be awesome. Dream scenario: get a second round pick. Trade down and still get an offensive tackle in the first. Grab Michael Penix and either Jalen McMillan or Xavier Leggette in the draft.

Russell Wilson will land somewhere. He and Lockett had great chemistry; it wouldn’t be a surprise if he urged his new team to get Tyler.

It's time for change. He purposely dropped his YAC to preserve his body. And he may have taught JSN as much as he can. Whenever the move happens I will miss him. So many screamin, yellin, gaspin great moments in his career.

…and despite playing to protect himself, it looked to me like Tyler was playing hurt during the second half of the season. In the past, when he’d convert a first down, he’d pop up, smile, and point towards the end zone. Recently, after getting first downs, he looked like he’d just had a root canal - without Novocain.

Whatever he does next, I hope he has more in the tank.

Once again, a very convincing argument from SSJ.

I just hope Lockett plays ball (so to speak) and agrees to a cut and stays. He’s a hawks favourite and still a handy receiver. And such a nice dude it seems. It’d be a shame if he doesn’t agree to friendly terms.

Yeppers. My favorite player ~ Here's hoping Tyler sees that a refresh (taking a large pay cut) to stay fresh (to help the team while at the same time staying cost reasonable) will extend his playing time in a comfortable situation.
