A key stat to watch is offensive penalties. A coach can’t affect a player’s speed, reaction times, and instinct, but they can influence the mental and technique aspects.

With a short yardage offense, a reliable team can march down the field and score regularly. But throw in a ten yard penalty, and short gains won’t cut it.

Can Waldron’s staff coach the talent on this roster to play smart, error-free ball? That’s one way to maximize what they have. Sloppy play would doom the OC and those around him.

Pete is loyal to his coaches. Even though it defies the odds, I think Waldron is here until we see how he is with our new QB. 2024 will be our new QBs second season and the defense should have a new pass-rusher and Jamal Adams. Building a contender is Pete/John's wheelhouse so it's a smart move by Allen to retain them for that job. I think Pete wants one last Super Bowl but I doubt he coachs past age 75 which would be 2026. If we are a serious SB contender in 2024, Pete will deserve to be the coach. I think Sean Desai was brought in as heir apparent if his defense pans out.

I said many times that I'd welcome Schottenheimer as a *pass game* coordinator or QB coach with an open heart

The only success Waldron has had, was during Rashaad Penny's hot streak and the game one win over the Colts. A point I would like to make with the disclaimer Russ was great for us for ten years. It seems to be fact that Russell Wilson had a big hand in the hiring of Waldron, a year later his top ten quarterback is gone. He has some good pieces to work with. He seems like a nice guy, and despite having good players I am pretty sure Seattle averages in the bottom 5 in offensive opportunities. The bend don't break defense doesn't lend itself to a lot of 3 and outs.

If DK isint over 1000 yards and our run game combined isn't 1600 yards plus, Shane will be a footnote in the annuls of Seahawk football. I for one am cheering for him to make a silk purse out of less than great materials, and to survive despite his nice guy demeanor. Ps I am also crossing my fingers that Pete isn't overly involved, as offense isint his true calling.j

Great analysis Ken. NFL coaching is an unforgiving job.

Waldron needs to show flashes where he can scheme yards despite the lack of talent under center. While the wildcat red zone pass has been widely panned, I at least think it reflects an attempt to work around team liabilities. Don’t do that play again, but keep working on ways to keep the defense off balance.

I’ll be watching how Waldron adapts to what defenses show going forward. If he can bring adjustments in the third quarters (and he hasn’t yet) he will definitely be a short timer.

You are very convincing. I say hire Bevel to be our OC. He was good, overall. However, my pet peeve is that play calling is a skill set separate from most other jobs an OC is responsible for. Hire a person dedicated to calling plays. And that includes adjusting play calls to account for what the defense is doing. That's a full time job. Where it would fall on the coaching tree I don't know. It could be just below Pete. Or not.

Waldron may or may not be the right OC but it's hard to tell with a QB that can't throw the ball over 10 yards. Gino has the lowest yards per pass attempt in the NFL.

This also severely impacts the running game. Opponent DCs just pack the box completely unafraid of the deep ball even though we have two of the best long ball receivers in the league! Unfortunately nothing will change as long as Gino's the QB. One more night mare offensive performance and say hello to Drew Lock. What do the Hawks have to lose?

Also the tackling is still atrocious. Maybe they need to hire Richard to teach the DBs how it's done.
