How does Woolen pronounce Riq. Is it "reek" or "rick"? If the former, I can see his teammates saying to him after a sweaty, but good practice, "Man, you reek." Ha ha.

It is indeed the "Reek" version

I have confidence that Riq will improve. Coachability, if not humility, is one of those traits that JSPC have isolated and searched for in their "new" drafting style. It comes along with that competitiveness that they love in guys.

“But I don’t think that Thinking Football is trying to be unfair or critical of Woolen and instead is just doing what any good coach would do: Give football players notes on areas of improvement.”

The great ones want to know about their weaknesses—for them, it’s all about continuous improvement.

Tbf the NFL, and all round sports media, could do a much better job at showcasing and making starts of CB's and other positions outside of QB, WR and DE/Edge. There is so much missed talent as young kids want to be the flashy player, replicate the traits of Mahomes and Jefferson, when if they carved out a niche spot we could easily see a generation flooded with Shermans, Ray Lewis's and more. (This isn't an American Football specific problem, every sport suffers from this and kids pushing to be the next LeBron or Messi when if they tried harder in other areas they could become HOF'ers in their own rights just at a different role/position)

This is so true. We had a good way of doing a coaching thing in the league I coached my son in juniors here in Australia (in Australia Rules football). During the age groups from under 8’s to Under 12’s, our club had the rule that every player had to change positions after every 1/4. Other than occasional minor tweaks, I would just move the players down the lines each 1/4 (there are 5 lines, plus ‘on-baller’s’ if you don’t know Aussie Rules Footy).

It forced the kids to have a go at playing D, forward (OS in NFL) and on ball (i.e. following the ball around the entire ground/pitch). It also gave us coaches the opportunity to see where a kid was likely to be better suited when they got to the age where positions started to settle (under 14’s).

I believe it's all about the coaches. I can just talk about european Football (Soccer If you want) but If you really want to be the best and are able to get to a great Team with great Coaches they just put you on a Position where the think you'll be the best after watching you Play and train. There it is more on bad Coaches being the reason you have the wrong Position. The reason here is maybe that Positions there are way more equal than American Football Positions. If you see traits for a specific position, for example perfect vision and first touch ability, you have to put the Player in a Position where he constantly gets the Ball.

In the end it's about the Player's desire to reach his Goals. You can't become a Champion without passion. Even Messi, definitely one of the most talented Players of all time, may have trained for half his life.

One last Thing...

I don't have as much time at the moment so i can't read SSJ every day like before. Getting into the 'luxury' of being unable to catch up to the new articles is an incredible thing and tells everything you need to know about SSJ. No day without Seahawks News.

Thank you Ken, thank you SSJ Community. 5$ = Best Bargain you can ever get.

I’m reading this in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, less than one mile from the Wright Brothers Museum and site of the first flight. I’m just meant to be a SSJ subscriber—it’s fate! Newspapers of the day filed their reports from neighboring Kitty Hawk, and the name stuck.

My gf says that there was a telegraph office in Kitty Hawk, which the reporters used.

Check out the Lost Colony live play production if you're into historical things. I used to vacation the Outer Banks every summer when I grew up in Richmond, and rolling down the dunes (which I don't think they allow anymore) and seeing The Lost Colony and Manteo historical area where two of my faves.

Also, I am born Christopher Hawkins, nicknamed "Hawk" my whole life. So, I, too, have been a C. Hawk my whole life. Cheers!

"Woolen would try to sneak away from his fellow cornerbacks to try to run wide receiver drills. Coaches would pull him back over to the cornerback group, and he played 20 snaps in the final game of UTSA’s 2019 season at his new position."

Mr. Riq Wollen needs to buy some season tickets for his former coaches.

I think he prefers to be called "Riq" now.

Yep, which is in the article also. But for the purposes of "google doesn't know that yet" and "not everybody knows that yet", I do not think that he will be offended because a writer called him the name he's been known as this entire time. It will take a while to set in.

It is very difficult for a player who never wanted to tackle to become good at it in the NFL. I think Woolen has been honest about his tackling. He spoke so highly of Coby Bryant's ability to tackle on the inside. It will be hard for Woolen to become a great tackler as there is very little tackling in practice. My advice is that he learns how to arrive early to intercept the man with the ball. If he can do this his tackling form is not as much a problem. If Riq anticipates the angles well he will be fine. This from an unwilling tackler who got taught this by an international rugby player. This and $2.05 Canadian will get you a double double at Tim Hortons. The rest of the critiques of Riq can be learned the tackling is 90% mental !

(Another) great article.

Riq is not yet "fully formed" but the "can't coach this" attributes he has--length and speed--will enable him to be elite if he learns from his experience and hs coaches.
