The Seattle Seahawks almost picked the best edge rusher in the 2024 NFL Draft. Instead they picked the best defensive tackle, if not eventually the best defensive player in the entire class, but there is evidence that suggests that Boye Mafe and Derick Hall could be great complementary edge rushers rather than either of them becoming a “true number one” like Myles Garrett, Nick Bosa, or…

Jared Verse?

In Seaside Joe’s final newsletter prior to the 2024 draft, he laid out 3 prediction scenarios, the first of which was sticking and picking edge rusher Jared Verse. Although what Seaside Joe started with was…

I might choose Byron Murphy II, but I believe he will be a top-10 pick. If Murphy is on the board at 16, maybe he would be the choice.

Murphy was on the board and the Seahawks picked him, a move that is already paying off with the evidence points towards a successful and productive career as he continues to develop in Mike Macdonald’s defense. However, the subject today is edge rushers and why Seattle still needs to find its own Jared Verse, the player they might have picked if Murphy was gone.

Despite having good depth at outside linebacker with Mafe and Hall, the numbers point to the Seahawks still needing a true #1.

What is that evidence, why does it matter, and how could it impact Seattle’s 2025 offseason moves in free agency and the draft? Who could they target and what does it mean for Mafe, Hall, and other Seahawks?
