JARRAN REED RE-SIGNS WITH SEAHAWKS!
Should Seahawks trade for Trey Hendrickson? Latest on DK Metcalf trade rumors, the Geno Smith fallout, and Seattle free agency!
The Seattle Seahawks re-signed Jarran Reed to a three-year, $25 million contract on Sunday, according to Adam Schefter.
The deal keeps Reed from negotiating with other teams on Monday when the free agency tampering period opens, and keeps the defensive line together for another season at a price tag of $8.3 million per season.
The Seahawks then signed Ernest Jones to a three-year contract.
Compared to similar DT contracts, Reed’s first year cap hit could come in around $8-$10 million, almost the same amount that the Seahawks saved by trading DK Metcalf to the Steelers on Sunday.
Reed has had 99 tackles and 11.5 sacks since reuniting with the Seahawks in 2023. He now stays alongside Leonard Williams and Byron Murphy for probably at least two more years, lessening Seattle’s need for anymore help in that area.

zezinhom400: Two difference-makers out there now: Myles Garrett and Trey Hendrickson. They're not the same guys (I think Garrett is the best defensive player in the NFL) but either would clearly be the missing piece on our front 7.
So here's my question: what would you pay for these two, or, would you say even they are just too expensive if their APY starts at $35m?
Many of you know by now that Garrett signed a four-year, $160 million extension with the Browns on Sunday. Back in December, I wrote that Garrett would either be traded or holdout, and when he put himself on the trade block a month ago, I wrote that I expected him to stay in Cleveland:
“My guess is that the despite this noise, Garrett signs an extension in Cleveland because $100 million tends to make anyone happy.”
Garrett will get exactly $100 million from 2024-2026.
As for Trey Hendrickson, yes, I do think he at least makes more sense than Garrett for the simple reason that the Bengals are actually going to trade him. The biggest obstacle in trading for Hendrickson is Garrett’s $40 million per season extension.
In the last five seasons, Hendrickson has 70 sacks and Garrett has 72 sacks. Other than being a former number one pick and one year younger, what has Garrett done to deserve that much more than Hendrickson? A team has to pay at least $35 million per year for Hendrickson (Maxx Crosby got $35.5) so the numbers post-trade will come in around four years, $144 million, $65 million guaranteed.
Would Seattle attempt to sign Hendrickson at those numbers if he was a free agent? Well, I wouldn’t put the Seahawks AT THE TOP of that list just because the team never signs elite free agents, especially when they’re 30.
That being said, if you open up $70 or $80 million in cap space, why do that if not to make a play for someone?
A year ago, the Giants traded a 2 and a 5 for Brian Burns. The trade price for Hendrickson should be similar. Is that something that fans would do for Hendrickson, who leads the NFL with 35 sacks in the past two years?
Rusty: My question is simple. Why is Noah Fant still on the roster? Does he have incriminating photos of John Schneider or Jody Allen?
To some degree, do offensive coordinators always think they can “fix” a player like Noah Fant? If the Seahawks are successful in trading DK Metcalf (and the reported trade compensation keeps going down in the days since I wrote that Seattle wouldn’t get a first for DK), then Fant becomes the de facto number two receiver until further notice. Klint Kubiak may look at Fant and see a tight end who should be targeted 50% more often next season?
In my “Does Fant have trade value?” article a couple of months ago, I mentioned Jonnu Smith as a late-career tight end breakout, but there are others. In my offseason plan series, I had the Seahawks keeping Fant, only because I also had them trading DK and parting with Geno to save money.
Fant has been a disappointment in the past three seasons. He was overpaid last year. But the benefit to trading or releasing him goes down as trades help Seattle’s cap space go up.
Danno: People are saying it might be possible to get a 2nd this year for DK, might it be possible to get a 1st next year for him?
No, it is not possible to get a first round pick for DK Metcalf, whether you mean trading him now for a 2026 pick or waiting until next year to trade him; he will be a free agent and tagging him, as we’ve seen with the younger Tee Higgins, doesn’t make him attractive on the trade market.
If the Seahawks get a second round offer for DK Metcalf, they have to just take the best one.
Seattle is is no rush to trade Metcalf like they were with Geno:
Geno was due a $16 million roster bonus next week
Metcalf has no roster bonuses due
DK’s value can’t really go down before the draft, but it could go up
The Seahawks could wait until after free agency and then contact/be contacted by the teams that are still unhappy with their X receiver position. Because the draft is low on X receivers, Metcalf carries some value there after free agency.
However, he still probably doesn’t carry first round value.
As I’ve been saying for the last few years, teams don’t want to commit to receivers who are 30 or almost-30. When they have done that, like Davante Adams, Stefon Diggs, and Cooper Kupp, the results have been disastrous.
Please get your hopes down and maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Grant: Will Nick Bellore be signed by the Raiders?
Makes sense!
Chuck Turtleman: How much longer does Mike Mac have than JS in terms of seasons before we win a playoff game?
I guess we would have to really breakdown why the Seahawks were disappointing. If the defense is clearly a success, the team wouldn’t want to get rid of Mike Macdonald. But if the defense is that successful, is John Schneider really on the hot seat?
While others seem to think so, I don’t believe the Seahawks are necessarily gearing up to fire Schneider if they miss the playoffs in 2025.
#1 - I think the Seahawks will make the playoffs in 2025, so it’s a moot point for Seaside Joe
#2 - The team is heavily invested in Schneider’s vision, largely tied to picking Macdonald as head coach, so logically they would give him as many years as they gave Pete Carroll…Which was at least three.
If the Seahawks felt they were headed down a bad path because of Schneider, who runs the team after him? And what makes that person so confident that Macdonald is the right head coach? Because they aren’t going to make Macdonald the GM.
That’s pretty far down the list of possible futures though, so for now fans should buckle in for JS/MM because clearly the team doesn’t want to identify with Pete’s vision anymore.

Jarran Reed is a superb DT and at <$10m I’m delighted. If Murphy makes the 2nd yr leap, these three (including Big Cat) can rotate and the interior of the line is Top 10 in the league.
Now let’s find a killer edge that can also mentor Mafe and Hall.
And re-sign Jones. Several recent LB signings are setting the market, I’m guessing 3/$40
Signing Reed is good news. Signing Jones will be better news.
