Where are you, Capetown?
I am still looking for the winner of The Longest Yard contest, which is the person who responded with saying that they are from Capetown, South Africa. Maybe the answer was someone goofing around, but if it was you and you are not keen on leaving a comment, send me an e-mail back! (And yes, I will be asking a couple questions about your story and how you got to following the Seahawks.)
Seasider Dale:
So Melbourne was second? That feels pretty special. Can I request we get the chains out just to be sure?
I guess we’ll find out soon, Dale!
Seasider KHammarling:
The opposite point of the planet from Lumen Field is 47° 35' 43.2" S, 57° 40' 6.1" E. Closest land point, Alfred Faure, a French science station. Just in case any French readers fancy a challenge :p The Herd & McDonald Islands are also not far off for any Ronalds that want a trip.
Cape Town, about as far as possible, whilst still remaining in a normal inahbited area. So damn, that's a well deserved win!
Seasider Luke:
I’m just going to put it out there that I’m not the only ‘Hawks fan in Nepal:
Damn, that’s a sweet jacket!
Seahawks fans say where they are from and how they started
Seasider Rusty:
I gotta say...I loved reading through the comments in the Longest Yard piece.
I does kind of feel like a huuuuge extended family now.
Seasider Charlie Gage:
We are community all our seasiders and me. Love it.
Indeed!
Who would be 25 Seahawks who could get cut now?
It seems harsh, but talking about who will and did get cut is just the nature of the football business. About 10 days before final cuts, I listed 25 names that I felt we could probably eliminate from contention for the 53-man roster. All 25 were released.
Seasider JIMMY JOHNSON:
What are we seeing from Stone Forsyth that keeps him off anybody's cut list?
Forsythe has the gift of size leading to opportunity. Like Sonics legend Robert Swift, sometimes you’re just born with a million dollar check in your pocket because you’re in the 99.99 percentile of size.
4 under-the-radar breakout candidates
I noted Noah Fant, Colby Parkinson, Darrell Taylor, and Myles Adams in this article.
Seasider Doug:
I love this part of the season when hope and optimism bloom. This is the most exciting team to watch come together though since 2012. There is hope that *every position group* will be "better" than it was last year--even the TE room. Why the TE room? The role of the TE in this scheme will be much more sharply defined--less swiss army knife and more scalpal, because all of the other weapons available. The need for run support could mean fewer snaps for the guy who does not excel in that area--Fant. Which might mean Fant is *under the radar*!
Seahawks links: Figuring out Seattle’s secondary
In this post, I covered a few of my favorite team-specific links from the week and I’ll try to do this more often and when it fits in the schedule. There was a lot of positive feedback in the comments and it’s just a matter of me setting out which weekly series I’ll have the time to cover on a regular basis; as a reminder, Seaside Joe is what I do in my free time on the side of a full-time job, so if you want to help create more time for Joe, consider upgrading to premium Regular Joes today for as little as $5:
Seasider Chris H:
Alert! Do not sleep on the Rams in week 1. Everyone is expecting them to really suck......and they may.....but week 1 always seems to look a little ugly and unpolished. A few missed opportunities and shoddy tackling and who knows what could happen. I would love us to blow them out to start the season, but can anyone remember a week 1 blowout lately?
I respect the anxiety that comes with the unknown and Week 1 in the NFL always does come with a shocker.
(My pick would be Washington falling to the Cardinals because the Moons seem destined to fire Ron Rivera midseason.)
I just can’t abide by the Rams not having the worst or bottom-three defense in the NFL. If the Seahawks lose to the Rams at home, a team starting maybe only one player on defense who is a legitimate starter (Aaron Donald, of course), it’s embarrassing. That’s what it would be, a real “wake up call” that maybe Seattle’s remodel isn’t as close as we think.
I know that only a year ago, the Seahawks “upset” the Broncos in Week 1, when everybody expected Seattle to be much worse than they turned out to be. But a) the Broncos turned out to be one of the worst teams in the NFL and b) the Rams are much worse off now than the Seahawks were then.
I’m going to go more in-depth on my Rams preview soon, but the short story is that I can’t comprehend why people are talking about that team (not you Chris, just what I’ve generally seen in the media) as if they’re closer to the 2021 version that won the Super Bowl than the 2022 version that went 5-12. The team looks far worse than the 2022 version that was already terrible.
And to answer your question, maybe the last true Week 1 blowout was in the 2014 season opener against the Packers (36-16), but Seattle hasn’t been bad in Week 1 recently: 2019 (21-20 W over Bengals), 2020 (38-25 W over Falcons), 2021 (28-16 W over Colts), and 2022 (17-16 W over Broncos).
Even if the Seahawks do manage to lose to the Rams in Week 1, I won’t feel bad that I said that Seattle should blow them out. They should blow them out. If they don’t score a lot of points on that defense, it’s a red flag.
What’s your favorite (football) position?
It looks like we’ve got a showdown on offense between QBs and RBs, and nearly a FOUR-WAY TIE on defense for everybody except defensive tackles. Maybe because Seattle hasn’t had a great one since Cortez Kennedy? Let the position tournament commence:
Could Seahawks attempt to trade for Chris Jones?
I’ve made a couple of bonus articles about the terms of any potential trade for Chris Jones. I’m sure the Chiefs will do everything in their power to not trade him, although I think his situation is harder to resolve than Nick Bosa’s in San Francisco. I also accept that maybe I don’t fully realize the potential fit for Jones on the Seahawks (when has “fit” ever mattered to Pete when making a trade though?) so I’ll send it over to Shaymus…
Shaymus McFamous:
My concern about bringing in Jones is that he started as a 295lb DE and has always played in a 4-3 as a DT. Our 3-4 scheme traditionally calls for a large 310+ lb run-stuffer-block-eater at NT. He is not that guy. Now, maybe he would fit and we can be an agile attacking defense with him, but our issues have been stopping the run, and with the 3-4, he is probably not the solution to THAT problem, unless we played Reed at NT and Jones at 3-4 DE. Not saying my concerns make me vehemently opposed to a trade, but his fit is a question that would need to be answered definitively before we made any moves. I'm sure JSPC-CH (Clint Hurtt) would come to a consensus before doing anything. I trust our "brain trust" over the 49ers', as noted by previous commentors. Our John > their John.
You could be right!
Is Drew Lock a trade asset?
This was one of the most popular articles of August. It’s always the articles that I’m the most afraid to publish! I just assume people really don’t want to talk about trading players, but maybe in Lock’s case, because he’s a free agent in 2024, people are open to it: 87% responded to the poll that they would listen to trade offers for Drew Lock.
Seasider HD:
I just ran across this acrticle from the Denver press concerning our boy Drew. From last Tuesday, https://predominantlyorange.com/posts/drew-lock-proving-denver-broncos-got-it-painfully-wrong.
Unless I am mistaken, I'm sure that Lock was offered some other backup rolls in the spring before Seattle resigned him. He opted to stay in Seattle because of PC and Waldron and the way the organization was run. From an another article earlier this week. https://www.si.com/nfl/seahawks/news/seattle-seahawks-drew-lock-resign-free-agency-geno-smith-pete-carroll-dk-metcalf
Lock knows that your opportunity to become a starter can be an injury away. Geno has the job but Lock feels, and perhaps was told, he could have that job one day if he was patient and continued to grow in the system. Lock is no fool.
I always appreciate links! Thanks, HD!
Zezinhom400:
Holy crap, that Alabama team was basically an NFL team -- and had 3 NFL starters at QB?? Holy crap.
Yep. Just wait until we talk about the 2021-2022 Georgia defenses.
Seahawks 53-man roster and practice squad PROJECTION
I wrote this after the last preseason game. What I got wrong on offense: I put Cade Johnson instead of Cody Thompson. It’s easy to claim now, I know, but I would have put Thompson if it wasn’t for the fact that we knew nothing about his health status; I think Thompson is more favorable to Pete Carroll but has an extensive injury history. What I got wrong on defense: I had Matt Gotel instead of Jon Rhattigan and I had Joey Blount making it, as I didn’t know how serious his injury was either.
Well, Rhattigan is already gone, replaced by Drake Thomas. Blount is essentially replaced by Kyu Blu Kelly. I had Artie Burns making the 53, which he did, but now he’s on the practice squad.
All-in-all, I think 50 out of 53 is pretty good and it sounds like Matt Gotel could be called up any day. Similarly, Artie Burns and Cade Johnson are on the practice squad, with Burns as a probable call-up eventually. Nobody from my 53-man projection isn’t essentially on the team.
Seasider Daniel Carlson:
I’m curious why TE Tyler Mabry is cut and not on the practice squad with Cannella there instead. I understand him not making the 53, but has Cannella been good enough so fast to displace Mabry who has been with the team in the past (PS last year I believe)?
You were right! Mabry is on PS, Cannella isn’t.
Top-5 most improved Seahawks in 2023 offseason
Seasider Danno:
For a guy who can't outrun the coverage, Bobo seems to always get open. I just love the idea of Geno throwing to DK, Tyler, JSN and Bobo. Three savvy route runners and DK. Give Geno 3 seconds of protection, and he completes over 70% of his passes this year. Dee Eskridge has 17 receptions in 2 years. 1 TD. Bobo will have that in less than 1/2 a season. More Bobo!
Everyone’s a big fan of the “Be Ordinary, Be Open” tag given to Bobo by one of our own, Seasider HD. Go make T-shirts, Jake Bobo! For more Bobo and JSN highlights, consider checking out the Super Joes post from Thursday if you want to and have the means to support at $10. The extra 0.1% of content is not to exclude anyone, it’s just to try and get SJ closer to being more than what I do in my free time.
(Which right now amounts to all of my free time for almost every day of the year.)
Love these recap articles :D.
Now raise with me a frosty, lime-and-salt-rimmed glass to Jimmy Buffet who passed today (cuz it's 5 o'clock somewhere...):

Those two corresponding "where are you from" articles that basically became "how did you become a Seahawks fan" are two where I kept going back to read every comment because they were so interesting. Really is super cool to see how far-reaching the appeal of your work has become and how many different routes there are to becoming a fan of this team. I really loved discovering how many people became fans almost by accident.
